Thanks for the interesting review concerning this book. I have to say that the story intrigues me, but the pace may throw my interest off. I'm all for detail but if it slows the story down I feel I'll lose interest. I'll put this book on my to-be-read shelf.

Little known stories in history are my absolute favorite! I've never heard of the Cossacks before and this sounds like an interesting and dramatic tale. Thanks for the review, I'll definitely check it out!

Tragedy- unpleasant event that hug the Cossacks in WWII, having Don and Dejnev families left.
A battle that left two family starving out of many is surely a serious battle of no mercy, weting the ground with bloods.
Truly we have so many events which we can easily forget but in this case it have a sit in our memory, the day full violent is encountered. This story would truly be an interesting one not only to be told indoor(at home) but even in school, museums etc. This worth reading. Thanks you.

I'm not a fan of historical fiction, especially when it features war and the mistreatment of a huge group of people. I don't see myself reading this book, even if something good happens for the characters, the bad events will stick to my memory.

It sounds like this author did a great job of making a potentially boring subject interesting through the use of strong characters. It's a shame the time shifts and typos detracted from it.

Although the preview provided by Amazon was interesting, historical fiction is not a genre I usually read, although Katja sounds like a girl/woman I'd like to get to know. But as I said, I'm going to pass. Congrats to Ronald McQueen on the BOTD.

While I love reading historical fiction, WW2 is especially hard for me. I will have my husband read this first as it is his favorite time period, then make my decision.

I'm a huge fan of historical fiction, but unfortunately when I read the sample I found the author's style too hard to get into and, like you, the unexpected jumps in time made it difficult to know which time period I was reading. Not one for me, but thanks for a great review!
