Well, that was unexpected - but in a really good way. I was ready to dismiss this as a "dry and dusty" academic tome, but your review indicates otherwise. Thanks for the recommendation!

I recently enrolled for Chinese classes and I believe that this book will give me an upper hand in learning Chinese history and classes.
