It seems as though it is too irresistible for authors to write about New Orleans without mentioning Vodoo practices in some way. Perhaps this is because it has influenced the culture so much.

Even so, this historical fiction novel seems to touch on a very sensitive topic — race relations. I like the fact that this story centers around a budding friendship.

It has indeed been a different time back then. I love historical fiction in general and the theme of this book seems interesting enough. Vodou magic and ritualistic sacrifices are something that seriously frighten me and I am happy that I can only read a story instead of being there in the actual scene...
