There are several things I liked about this novel. First, the characterization of the major characters. I liked how the author gave readers explicit details of several characters right from when they were born. As a result, readers will be able to connect better with them.

That is a great way to make far-away events seem less distant and make the reader feel more empathy.

Another thing I liked about this book is that the author understood that during wars, there must be casualties on both sides.

It is a reality. This is why we should try to avoid wars when they're only based on greed.

Also, it was pleasing that I learned a lot of Spanish and German words since the several characters spoke those languages during several parts of their dialogues. Whatever was said in Spanish or German had their translations written right beside them.

Few authors take the time to think how much easier the reading is when they take care of tiny details like this one, so kudos to the author.

The only thing I didn’t enjoy about the book is that the author seemed to be a bit biased towards the British, such that any plan they made against the German forces was flawless.

Well...Churchill was a strategic genius.

Although today's BOTD isn't the one for me, readers who enjoy historical fiction books about war, specifically WWII, will thoroughly enjoy this one! Obviously I wasn't born when this war happened. Seeing that someone can be creative enough to recount the happening of those times is absolutely amazing. To read and feel what it would have been like during the war is like wining a trophy for me. As a student of history, this is very helpful. The review was so informative. It describes the book right on the money without giving away the whole thing. The story is intriguing in itself because of the history and the people. Each war story is different due to the writers characters and experiences. Not my genre to read but for those interested they will love it. And the review just draws you into wanting to read it.

It's critical that we remember the efforts that went into preserving freedom and democracy against tyranny, particularly during this present time when autocrats are doing their best to undermine democratic principles. This is a great novel describing details of World War II. Moreover the author did brilliant characterization so the reader had a clear idea of what the characters learned in each drill and wasn’t confused or surprised when they performed certain stunts during actual battles. I like that the author has significantly contributed to the realism of the book with various details, such as the use of Spanish and German words and losses on both sides. I also like the fact that Herman is obviously of German descent but has opted for justice.
