I love historical fiction. I too like WWII period novels; however, I am not to particular as long as it is a good read. I like my historical fiction to symbolize more probable characters. I like to get absorbed into a work and feel like I am really there and it is reasonably possible that the story could have happened.
Most recent historical fiction must reads:
The Stalking Jack the Ripper Series by Kerri Maniscalco
The Lady Sherlock Homes Series by Sherry Thomas
Out of Time Thriller series by Belle Ami
Vlad: The Last Confession by C.C. Humphreys

I love historical fiction. I enjoyed most of Kate Morton's books and am a big fan of Simone St. James (her books have a paranormal element as well, which makes them all the better). The Alienist by Caleb Carr is also a favorite.

But the very best historical fiction I ever read is Lincoln by Gore Vidal. I loved it even more after I read Doris Kearns Goodwin's Team of Rivals a few years later and realized just how accurate Lincoln was and how much research Vidal must have done for the book.

Personally I love books set around the ancient Greece era. The mythical gods and beasts add a wonderful touch of fantasy to the stories. Specifically Spartan stories, as they also have amazing resilience and fighting spirit. It's interesting with how they are brought up. My favourites are:
The Fox
Yesterday (set in civil war period but still a great story)

The Book Thief by Markus Zusak (the best of the best it a must read!!! I am happy I did read it)
Nightingale by Kristin Hannah (it's about war and it's about women in war)
I have read some historical fictions but the 2 above are my favorite. I want to try Boy In The Striped Pyjamas by John Boyne some day too, it's about Holocaust and I saw the trailer of the movie adapted and I was impressed.

"The Book Thief" is also one of my favorites! I don't have a specific time period of historical fiction that I prefer, but my other two favorites are "Les Miserables" by Victor Hugo and "The Help" by Kathryn Stockett.

I loved historical fiction that brings facts together with the author's imagination of what people thought and said and did. I'm currently reading No Dark Clouds by RW Nelson. It's centered around the crucifixion of Jesus, but mostly through the eyes of a young beggar boy. I don't really have a favorite time period that I would is my favorite, but the books thst tell the stories of the Bible are close to the top. Consider Two from Galilee by Marjorie Holmes or Journey to the Well by Diana Wallis Taylor. Another time period, A Cobbler's Tale by Neil Perry Gordon.

I really enjoy historical fiction. I like ones about world wars because the amount of courage and determination of the people then was incredible and very interesting to read about.
I love My Antonia and O Pioneers by Willa Cather. She incorporates incredible realism and description in her writing of life on farms in the wilds of Nebraska. Both are great reads!
I also enjoyed parts of All the Light We Cannot See.
The Endless Steppe is a good read too.

Historical fiction is my go-to whenever I'm having trouble finding something to read. A few favorites below. I love historical fiction that features a love story or some intrigue as well as factual historical events.

The Book Thief by Markus Zusak
The Other Boleyn Girl by Philippa Gregory
A Gentleman in Moscow by Amor Towles
Laura Martin

Bernard Cornwell is my favorite historical fiction author. His 'sharpe" series is how I was introduced to his work. He has other great series, ranging throughout historical Eras. Check his work out. You might get hooked too.

I've not watched the movie yet but it's on my list. It's not a happy book, but one that makes a stark point. The ending took my breath away.

I love The Book Their by Markus Zusack, Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet, Their Eyes Were Watching God, and Things Fall Apart. I love historical fiction books that allow you to get lost in the story and yet it seems timeless because of the richness of the characters. I also like it when they comment on life and the human experience in a way which is still relevant and deeply moving. :animals-cat:
