This is a historical fiction that talks about how Candy's mother's plan for Candy is to get married and produce the Janus heir, but that dream is shattered after Candy has to terminate her pregnancy through a heartless black market surgeon which makes her consider a new career in the medical field. I like how this book serves as an encouragement for females to pursue their dream despite any obstacles they may encounter. Nice review.

It's a shame that Candy had to get an abortion from a doctor on the black market. Seeing how she took that situation and used it as motivation to work even harder to make it as a doctor in a male-dominated world inspired me. I'm curious to know what was special about the Janus coin necklace and why so many women in Candy's family wanted it!

"Against the Glass" by Linda M. Habib is a compelling historical fiction novel that delves deep into the struggles of its protagonist, Candy Krzyzanowski. Set in 1966, Candy's determination to break free from traditional female roles clashes with her family's expectations of marriage and motherhood. The Janus coin necklace, an heirloom coveted by generations, symbolizes the conflict between her dreams and her family's traditions.Habib masterfully weaves a narrative that explores themes of resilience, gender equality, and the fragility of life. The symbolism of glass, prevalent throughout the story, adds a unique depth to the narrative. Whether it's the glassy surface of an ice-skating pond or the glass jars housing Candy's insect specimens, every element ties into the delicate balance of existence.Candy's character is a shining example of resilience. Despite facing heart-wrenching challenges, she evolves as a character, pushing through adversity and confronting painful experiences head-on. One of the most poignant moments in the book is the portrayal of an illegal abortion, shedding light on the grim conditions women endured in such situations. The supporting characters, like Candy's feisty friend Brenda, add depth and contribute to the historical changes unfolding in the story. The narrative is divided into four sections, each with its own unique appeal, and the writing is poetic, vividly depicting the struggles of a young woman striving for equality in a male-dominated world. While there are a few minor errors, they don't detract from the overall impact of the story. "Against the Glass" serves as a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by women in the pursuit of education and career opportunities. It's a testament to the strength of those who paved the way for gender equality.I wholeheartedly give this novel a rating of four out of four stars. I recommend "Against the Glass" to readers who enjoy historical fiction that tackles women's rights and gender equality, as well as those who appreciate literature with powerful thematic elements. Due to its mature content, including scenes of abortion and verbal abuse, it's best suited for a mature audience untroubled by such events. This book left a lasting impression and is a must-read for those who appreciate stories of resilience and the relentless pursuit of one's dreams.

Young women fighting for equality, the right to their dreams and the rights to decide for their own healthcare are all important topics told in the story "Against the Glass" by Linda M. Habib. Family traditions and the 1960 society and culture are also characters and we may even realize that society has come a long way by now but we still have far to go for true equality and freedom.
If you're going through hell, keep going.

This books sounds like a journey. It showcases how hard it was to be a woman in a world where you are not treated as a human being and don't have autonomy over your own life. Historically women's lives were controlled by their parents' and this resulted in their dreams shattering. Although the same happened to Candy in this story, she preserved and dreamer to become a doctor so no other woman will be in her situation. This book is a must read for woman these days as their lives are still being controlled in one way or another. By following Candy's journey, I am sure that the readers will be motivated to seize control of their own lives. Thanks for the detailed and amazing review.

I would have thought that Candy's biggest fans to push her on in her dream to become a doctor should be her family. However, her family, especially her mother, prefers the traditional role of motherhood for Candy. I love her courage to break through this barrier to be what she wanted for herself. Thanks for the review. I

Candy seems to have gone through the most, especially in a male dominated industry, but I love her determination. In as much as I am all for empowerment of women, aspects like abortions trigger me. Therefore, I shall pass from reading this book. Congratulations to the author on book of the day.
