A story about Kamel being changed from a child to man is a must read to me. It's amazing on how world war can change a person. That person has no choice but to be strong.

At first glance of the book cover, I was not interested in reading Kamel. But after reading the preview and your review, I will read the book. I like that the historical fiction is written through the eyes of Kamel, a boy who experiences the war. I too was a bit thrown off by the use of French and German phrases mixed in with English.

I do not like war stories or historical fictions so I'm going to pass. The review was enticing tho but not enticing enough.

Historical chapters especially the ones with the backdrop of wars and bloodshed often do not paint a very beautiful picture on the vast canvas of the reader's mind. But according to this review, what stands out about this story is that it was narrated by a school boy, a common citizen having nothing to do with the war yet forced to face all the unfortunate consequences of it. Also children put up a very unadulterated view of any situation on the table. This is the USP of this story, that it isn't some soldier or prisoner's point of view. The reviewer also points out to the fact that certain events are narrated so critically, they may ooze emotions out of the readers' hearts. Congratulations to the author. Looking forward to this one.

Sounds like an interesting book. I like books that show a character’s growth against the backdrop of a particular historical event. It’s even better when told in the voice of one of the characters. Great review; I may check this one out. :?

Nice review on emotional content. Historical fiction is generally hit or miss for me. Probably not my cup of tea but sounds like a good book besides the grammatical errors. Good job.

Coming-of-age can be hard for anyone, but coming-of-age in a time like World War I and having to witness your whole family slaughtered? I feel for Kamel. This sounds like an intense story, it is only a shame about the grammar and language mistakes. I'm able to read a bit of French, and running across translation errors would drive me nuts.

The cover alone gives me shivers. Although I've never experienced war, I'm aware that it leaves permanent scarring on all parties involved. For Kamel to witness such atrocities at a tender age has my heart bleeding for him.

I already needed a tissue after I read about the sandwich. What a gripping, heartrending read! Poor Kamel and his forced coming of age. Great review!

This sounds like a poignant and moving read. Historical fiction isn’t always my genre of choice, but Kamel’s journey sounds both interesting and emotional. I look forward to reading more of his story!

The fact that this story is set during one of the bloodiest battles of WW1 and is told through the eyes of a child seems very interesting.

This book sounds compelling, from the characterization of the young French boy to the setting and situation he finds himself in. However, considering the emotional journey Kamel goes through I may get caught up instead of actually finishing the book, so I won’t be reading this one.
