We frequently overlook what occurs behind enemy lines in battles. This interesting book vividly depicts the experiences. Victoria and Etta's characters stand out for their tenacity. They flout German law and risk their lives to help others. I still think war is never the answer. Good review.

Many persons tend to turn away from situations involving atrocities because these acts make them sad, uncomfortable, and conscience-stricken. War horrors are no different. So many have suffered, and we applaud those who were and are courageous in the face of extreme brutality. This is a lovely review for a powerfully poignant BOTD.

The sad truth about war is that the people who suffer most aren't the ones who propose the war. Such a touching read. Good review.

This sounds like an excellent historical fiction novel that takes a rarely seen viewpoint of the conflict, that of Polish Women. I can't wait to read more about Victoria's War.

The author narrates the story of Polish women captured by Germans during WWII. The protagonist, Victoria, is a slave with an ambitious plan to rescue mistreated women.

It seems to me this book and The Diary of Anne Frank have much in common. They demonstrate the ability of a suffering person to endure the unthinkable and even overcome them, at least if survival counts as victory. I'm often dismayed by what appears to be humanities delight in the misery of others. Perhaps this book and those like it can prevent hardened hearts from allowing atrocity to be acceptable.

Thank you for the wonderful review. I have read a sample of the book and also thought the author wrote it very well. It's a book that is written well and touches one's feelings, or at least mine.

This sounds like an interesting book. I didn't know about the struggle of Polish women during the war and would love to learn more about, but I'm a little scared to read this book if it talks about bad things happening to babies. Thanks for a thorough review!

I can't get enough of WWII stories.
Coincidentally, my latest review was by an author with the same surname! (Wonks)
I like the inclusion of disabled characters in the novel, so I look forward to reading about Etta's life.
Every year, I read at least 3 war stories, and I can relate to your review about the painful experiences of women during the war.
Congratulations on the BOTD!

From a sampling, this seems like an interesting historical fiction story set in WWII Europe where a young woman from Poland, Victoria, was captured by the SS and sold to a German family to work as a slave. Victoria develops a unique relationship with the deaf-mute daughter of the family, Etta. It might be worth a second look. Well done.

Thanks for the thorough and honest review. Your assessment suggests this book can be difficult and uncomfortable to get through at times, but the strong-willed characters instill the belief to the reader that their troubles are not, in fact, insurmountable. In that way, there is hope that humanity can overcome hate. Your conclusion about ignorance is well-taken - that behavior only leads to incorrect assumptions about very real and tragic experiences. Thanks. I will read this gripping tale.
