Young Kamel grew up on a farm in France but was eager to enjoy a different life style that would be more exciting and adventurous. Yearning for the USA, land of opportunity, he wanted to escape to start a new page away from his homeland. But the great war intervened and put everything in set back motion. When the Germans sweep through France, Kamel's entire family was captured and butchered.

This young lad had a lot of expectation. He did all that he could to fight for survival so far away form home with only wishful thinking of returning home.

However, if Kamel return home would this mean, viewing a piece of land that is no longer the family inheritance or he would have to start from scratch to rebuild?
Hence, there is more to be unfolded.

I too am enthralled by this story of Kamel. Sometimes circumstances push us to make decisions that we were not ready to face, just like Kamel. Great review.

Poor Kamel. I cannot imagine the pain that comes with losing a loved one. Yet he lost them all at once. His story is intriguing and makes me want to read the book. I hope the author fixes the errors and changes that cover. Great review! :D

There has not been a lot of historical fiction books that I have read and probably would not have been interested in reading this one. However, the very brief summary did not give me enough to make a decision of whether to read or not, so I started reading the sample pages and found that I was enjoying it. After your review, my interest in reading has increased and I will definitely check this book out. Great details given about the characters, plots and historical data gave me a more in depth look at what this book is about. Thanks

Historical war stories actually tells you how challenging life can be. However, this story is quite emotional and it gives an in depth thinking of what kamel really passed through while the event lingered. Your review catches the mind of your audience.

I love historical fiction and know I would become fully enveloped in this story. I can't imagine what Kamel and Grand-pere went through during such a terrible time in world history. I am very curious to see how Kamel changes and how it affects the sequence of events.

I haven't read many books with French protagonists, so I would be interested in reading that. However, you mentioned the language slips and I'm not sure if that would annoy me or not. I'll keep this in mind for the next time I want to cry over a book though. Thanks for the review!

Thanks for your great review! I enjoyed the sample, and I'm curious to learn about Kamel's emotional transition from childhood to more manly behavior, even while remaining a child. It seems the author has done an amazing job.

Tbunde5's candid book review resounds humanity's fear of war. Kamel was robbed of his youth, caught between a loving family and the frenzied war-freak society. Charles J. Haubner 's Kamel is a tapestry of interwoven reality and fiction. :tiphat: :tiphat: :tiphat:

A very nice review. I am not a fan of historical books and don't care at all for the spattering of different languages so I'll pass on this one. The sample I read lead me to believe I would not like the book but your review has given me some hope. You do make it sound like it would make for a good read if I could get past the languages.

Historical fiction isn’t my genre, and war stories don’t really interest me either. I’m sure this book will be enjoyable for some, but the grammatical errors mentioned—along with my general disinterest in the subject—mean I won’t be reading this one.
