I'm going to skip this books because it's not for the faint of heart. Sexual content aside, I may have trouble understanding the political aspect of the book. However, I'm curious about the outcome of the protagonist as he reaches adulthood. Congratulations on the BOTD.

The plot of this book is an amazing one. Grillo is such a kind person despite the circumstances of his reality. He exemplifies the saviour we all hope to find in the toughest period of our life. This book also shows the unfortunate effects of a discriminatory culture and the fate of the unlucky who are born into it. Grillo is an outlier and a brave one at that; To him, Malino owes all the thanks.

What a dark story with conditions no child should ever be subjected to. And yet many an orphan would tell you those are familiar conditions. It's a good job Barry does well with character development for you would need to believe in the characters in order to appreciate such a story.

I admire how the author painted a realistic picture of what life was like for Malino during the harsh institution of slavery in the United States. I wish for him to experience the pleasure and joy that all people are entitled to. In addition, the lesson learned in the novel is fairly harsh but, regrettably, necessary: in order to survive, you must do things that, under normal circumstances, you would consider dishonorable.
