Exactly. Thanks for passing by, todwyer01. I appreciate it.todwyer01 wrote: ↑19 Jan 2020, 20:02 From a sampling, this seems like an interesting historical fiction about or occurring around the time of the California Gold Rush. The story follows a Puritan that has fallen in love with a Chilean woman and decides to move to California before anyone else. It seems like it might be worth a second look. Well done.

You an I, tonight!
You may forget the warmth he gave,
I will forget the light.
When you have done, pray tell me
That I my thoughts may dim;
Haste! lest while you're lagging.
I may remember him!

You got it, Falconcrest. Old Western movies are great.Falconcrest wrote: ↑19 Jan 2020, 22:08 I am more inclined to read this because of the historical information, I would obtain from the story. The california gold rush is a well known event, I have seen a couple of old western movies that depict that era. But it will be awesome to read about it and get a feel of how life was then. Thanks for a truly wonderful review.

Thanks for your time.

Indeed. It's funny to see Henning disappointed when he realizes that people are not like him.Tam_R0se wrote: ↑19 Jan 2020, 22:10 I like your assessment of Playing Chess with God. I also prefer having a relevant antagonist to pit the main character against. From your review and the sample pages I read, I expect Henning gets any lingering naivety knocked out of him battling human nature and rigors of gold mining. It sounds like one of my favorite types of books and I thank you for the intriguing review.

Thanks for passing by, Tam_R0se. I appreciate it.

Thank you so much.CrescentMoon wrote: ↑19 Jan 2020, 22:15 This sounds like a very well written and well-researched book. I also don't like when there isn't a consistent antagonist to go against the protagonist but I'm glad overall that you enjoyed the book so much. Great review!

You are totally right, Agnes. Thanks for your post.Agnes Masobeng wrote: ↑19 Jan 2020, 22:58 I actually thought this novel is a religious-historical fiction because of the title. But the author had other intentions by this title; playing chess with God. The characters are well developed and it is beautifully written.

Henning Dietzel is a great human being. Too much of a workaholic for my taste, though.Fazzier wrote: ↑19 Jan 2020, 22:59 I like Henning Dietzel's mindset that a wealthy capitalist who exploits workers is a disgusting human being. I also like the fact that his obsession with work is motivated by a noble purpose not by greed. That's how things should be and since I like historical novels, I'm looking forward to reading this. Thank you for this wonderful review!

Thanks for your time, Fazzier. I appreciate it.
