The book is a historical and cultural backdrop. It narrates the family saga against vividly painted contexts of wars and revolutions. The review is superb.
Congratulations on Botd 🎉

I like that the book explores the after-effects that the war had on the Paine family. I couldn't imagine hiding a huge chunk of my life from my spouse; I guess it was too painful for Treat to explain. I love when the author introduces other forms of narration, such as journal entries; I think it gives the book another layer of intrigue. Thanks for the wonderful review!

This is a fictional book about war but it brings to light the pain and misery war can bring that lasts for generations. Congratulations BOTD !

While I really enjoyed this detailed review, war is a complicated subject to read about for me. Therefore I do not think I will be reading this. I commend the author though for doing such a great job throughout this book. However, for me it seems complicated to get through

I like the anti-war message of this family saga, so I'd be willing to add it to my reading list. I'm also interested in the historical and cultural background of the protagonist's first-person narration. Thanks for your review!

Basically, I like historical fiction but books that stretch out tend to bore me. However, the connection with war sounds very exciting.
The way you described it, one can even learn a lot from it. I will definitely give it a try.
In that sense, thanks for the review.

The sample pages carry a touch of sadness; that's what war does to you. However, the story, though not fast-paced, is compelling. I was drawn to the details. Thanks for a well-written review.

Why the Paines are at war is really putting me on edge war has never been a good thing but as a book topic it’s usually very interesting to see it unfold
I also commend the reviewer as he/she did a good job with this review

The historical fiction sections of the book sound intriguing. I am also wondering how much the author elaborates on the relationship between Treat and his wife after he told her about the death of his mother! You have piqued my interest about these characters and the history behind this family.

This sounds like a great book, that touches the negative aspects which a war brings on to those who are living. Thanks for the great review and congratulations on being the BOTD!

I love historical fiction as a genre, but unfortunately war stories are most definitely not my cup of tea. I associate everything related to war with extreme suffering and have no desire to delve deeply into the consequences, physical and psychological pain of survivals, the unbearable heartache of loss people had to deal with after the death of someone they love with all their souls.
