We are never entirely free from the past. What's important is how we choose to handle the situation. I would like to know how Elizabeth handled hers. Congratulations on BOTD

We are never free from our past, we cannot hide it or run from it, it doesn't matter how hard we try. Elizabeth tries to hide her African American nature, her essence, and qualities from her racist boyfriend. How can she start a life with someone who doesn't know anything real about her past?

The book does incorporate the factual details of the actual event, but never at the expense of readability. Both the incident and the imagined elements fit together naturally without seeming like a forced narrative around the event.
I am always interested in a writer's skill, and by your commentary here, it sounds like Swanson did a superb job. Good review!

I love reading about older characters who are still full of life and passion. Looking forward to spending a weekend with this book.

The author sounds very talented. As interesting as the book sounds, historical fiction is not my strong suit.

I'm a fan of historical novels, and I'll like to know more about the strong female character Margaret and how she was able to deal with her racist fiancee. I'll also like to know more about Elizabeth. Thanks for the great review

I have absolutely no interest in historical fictions therefore with regret I will have to give this otherwise engaging book a pass. Congrats on BOTD.

This historical fiction is based on a true event, one of Louisiana's last duels in the 1800s. Would Elizabeth Bancroft, an African American woman, light-skinned be successful in severing ties to the past and hiding the truth from her racist fiance? The lives of Elizabeth and Margaret Bohr intertwine beautifully. A well written book and a good book review. Congratulations on the BOTD!

I like that the book is also based on events that really happened in Louisiana’s in the 1800s. It is commendable that both the factual basis and the imagined elements fit together perfectly.

Elizabeth is an interesting character with an interesting story, and I'd love to read this book. Racism is a factor that affects the unity and harmony of people in a place. I'd love to know how the story ended. Thanks for your honest review.

I am literally obsessed with historical fiction thriller and this book drew me from the very first page in the book. I really enjoyed your review. I want to know how Elizabeth and her husband ends up though. Fingers crossed 🤞
