I don't really like war or historical fiction, so this is gonna be a pass for me. Thank you for the detailed review though.

Even though I'm not a fan of historical fiction, I loved the storyline. Also I can manage with the grammatical errors since I'm more interested in reading the novel. I hope it is as good as the reviewer writes it to be.

Great review! You definitely sparked my interest in this book. Since I grew up in a household where German was mixed with English, I'll probably find many familiar German/English butchered phrases.

The story of the young boy is absolutely heart-breaking. I felt so much pain and I haven't even finished the story yet. This book talks about heavy themes and not for everyone but it is a must read.

I read this sample and found it to be pretty interesting. I love historical fiction, and the way it starts off with Kamel and his childhood crush, Meya, interacting on their way to school really helps set the stage for the rest of the plot. As so many before him, Kamel is eager to explore the world and shed the confines of farm life, but fears how this will affect his family. Dialogue seems a bit forced, but perhaps that gets better as Kamel ages and matures.

The sample came across as an amazing read. The events of kamel's life are beautifully portrayed and his journey towards his nearby lurking fate is perfectly paced. The book seems to have it's Ingredients well arranged to make this historical fiction a compelling read.

This is a good summary and review. Unfortunately, there have been too many stories written about children surviving the slaughter of their parents. I am not compelled to try another one.

Thanks for the insight of what to expect. I've always been fascinated with history and this book sounds like it will be thrilling to read. The wars involving Germany have always caught my interest. I will definitely read the whole book.

Thanks for your review. It sounds like you really enjoyed this coming of age/war story. It’s too bad about the confusing use of phrases from different languages.

Great review, sounds like a good book. Historical fiction is my thing and I'd love to find out what became of the teenage boy, Kamel

World War 1 is one of the areas of military conflict that is least written about in military and fictional/historical literature, despite the fact that at least five new weapons were used for the first time in an actual war. This included aeroplanes, bombers and poison gas. Of course, machine guns inflicted the most casualties throughout the war. It is interesting to see this war written about from a different perspective!

This story sounds heartwrenching yet exhilarating. As a lover of historical fiction, I am interested to see how the wartime citizen lived/survived. Thank you for sharing.

It sounds as if this captures the experiences of ordinary people during a war well - they can go through life disregarding it until it affects them personally, as is the case here when Kamel's whole family except him and his grandfather is killed at the homestead. It's great that Kamel's character develops too, even though this happens as a result of things no one should have to experience.
This post was brought to you by the word "specifically".
