Interesting way of portraying the Polish immigrants and their connection to the roots...The review makes the novel look very attractive, and the sample sounded mysterious and intriguing.

I'm really interested to read about the prohibition era and all its criminal aspects: so 'long and detailed' will do just fine for me.

Historical fiction is not my favourite genre, so I will probably not read this book, but it sounds like the author did a great job in writing a compelling and detailed story.

A mystery thriller that takes place in Chicago around 1920. The two main characters are sisteer of Polish ancestry, Halina and Patcja, who live on the southside of Chicago. The mystery begins in a local tavern called The Corner. It was owned by Auggie who disappeared and then Joey, Patcja's first husband, took over the place. Then Joey went missing and Patcja and her second husband Bear took over the tavern. It seems like owning this tavern is dangerous and there is something unknown buried in a patch of cement in the tavern basement. One day a detective shows up asking questions about Joey's disappearance. One needs to read the book to solve the mystery. Good review.
