I was hooked from the get-go. One of the best things the author does is turn this fictitious book into something that sounds and feels real. I love reading stories about people who are able to pick themselves up after being beaten down. Even if Stephen doesn’t live the happiest life—who could with the physical and emotional scars he has—at least he’s trying to distance himself.

I typically struggle to really get into a book if there isn’t a good hook right at the beginning which is something I really enjoyed about the sample of this writing. Within a few sentences my imagination was immediately spinning as to where the story was headed. Very intriguing!

Very helpful and detailed review. I enjoyed sampling the first few chapters and liked the author's style of writing, the suspense, and Stephen as the character. I did not like the abuse inflicted on Stephen in his childhood and am not a fan of romantic fiction so I will not be reading on. But I agree with the reviewer that this book is enticing and deserves the top rating.
