A Police Action authored by A.A. Freda is a book of historical fiction in the era of the Viet Nam war. This novel is centrally a love story with a bit of war action to liven up the story.
James Coppi is a young draftee who has plenty of street smarts that allow him to do well in life. He is a quick thinker and, seemingly, can overcome any trouble that comes his way. Samantha is a young woman from Texas who lived a sheltered life while being raised by the strictest of parents. These two future lovers end up in Colorado, James via an army transfer and Sam from running away to live with a girlfriend. Their destined future is clear from the beginning and not even war or James’ own stupidity can keep them apart.
Admittedly, I broke the cardinal rule of literature by choosing this book based on the cover and title alone. Ready for an action-packed adventure through Viet Nam, the book I received was not what I expected, yet there was no disappointment. A Police Action gave me much more than I was expecting. The reader will find adventure, but also romance, love, action, and good old-fashioned banter between the guys. Finding something to like is easy to do in this tome.
At once, I fell in love with these characters. James is everything you can imagine a boy from the Bronx would be and Sam is a naïve yet smart young woman. Thus, making for an incredible couple. I found myself rooting for them from the start, while at the same, wanting to bop James on the head occasionally.
Though, the one aspect that gave me the most trouble was the slick style of Coppi’s character, as he is a smooth-talking, smart-mouthed, hustler. It seemed as if life came way too easy for Coppi, living his life his way and taking no guff from anyone. It wasn’t until later when I was waiting for something terrible to happen to him, that I realized he was merely playing it cool. James had his share of demons to deal with too, but they didn’t manifest for this reader until the end.
The novel is well-edited having found two errors throughout, and they were not enough to hinder my enjoyment of the story. Consequently, I award A Police Action a perfect 4 out of 4 stars. I would recommend this novel to anyone who enjoys delving into social issues as well as those who love a good, yet offbeat, romance from the male perspective.
