A Police Action by AA Freda is a Vietnam era story of James Coppi and Samantha Powers. Coppi enlisted in the Army because it was either that or go to jail. He questions his role in life, but every time something happens, he seems to be able to handle it better than those around him. He doesn’t understand how that can be. Sam is a frightened young woman who just found out she is pregnant and doesn’t know what to do. Sam approaches Coppi at a bar, something entirely foreign to her, and introduces herself. For some unknown reason, Sam breaks down in front of him, telling him about her problem and that she doesn’t know what to do. Coppi comes to her aid, and a sweet relationship begins.
Coppi finds her an apartment, opens a bank account for her, helps her with her problem, all for no reason other than he’s a really good guy. He asks nothing of her and she doesn’t understand this. Eventually, they fall in “like” and Coppi moves into the apartment. Sam finds a job she loves, and Coppi, with only ten months left in his tour of duty, is specially trained and then shipped to Vietnam with three months of duty left.
This story explores the horrors of that war and how Coppi manages to live through it. It follows Sam as she grows in her independence and confidence, advancing from saleswoman to floor manager and beyond. Sam is in love, but Coppi, also in love, does not think he’s good enough for her, thinks she would be better off without him, and doesn’t give her a chance after his return. Sam has grown into a very capable person, so she takes matters into her own hands.
Mr. Freda does an admirable job of describing what went on in Vietnam and how various characters handled it. He does not go into so much detail that it becomes a war story, just enough to get a quick glimpse and still make it readable to everyone. Each character has his or her own problems, flaws, and ways of handling situations.
I rate this 4 out of 4 stars. I am impressed that I did not find one grammar or punctuation error, which is a great credit to his editing team. I loved the way the author developed the story line. It was easy to read and easy to follow when he switched from one character to the other. He developed each character so that I felt like I knew them, instilling them with compassion, strength, intelligence, and humanity.
A Police Action is a sweet love story of two people growing up in the 70s, how they both stumble and learn and grow into adulthood. I recommend this book to everyone over 15 who loves a good love story.
