Gloria Richards is unemployed. Her job as a wing walker had ended when her boss crashed his plane and died. Gloria refused to return to her previous position as a singer, where she had to fend off the unwanted advances of her boss. Should she look for another job as a wing walker or should she accept the offer to star in a Hollywood film?

Daredevils comes under the genre of historical fiction. The author, Anne Greene, writes her novellas with this goal in mind: “To celebrate the abundant life Jesus gives.” She does this by allowing the reader to hear the characters’ inner prayers. These expressions of faith are neither preachy nor pushy.

The setting is Kill Devil Hills, North Carolina, in 1925. Gloria had no family and no income. She could continue as a wing walker knowing that Rand, her new boss, had plans to attempt to fly across the Atlantic. Her other option was to accept a lucrative offer to portray a wing walker in a movie role, but this would present many temptations to her faith. Should she continue with the job she loved, knowing that her boss could leave at any time; or should she accept the offer that would make her financially secure but spiritually vulnerable?

I thought the character development was well done. Gloria had depth, and her decisions and actions evoked a range of emotions in the reader. Rand also came across as a well-rounded character graced with wealth and talent. Women chased this attractive war-veteran pilot who treasured the dream of beating Lindbergh across the Atlantic Ocean.

I enjoyed the historical facts referenced in the story that immersed the reader into the scene with the characters. Charles Lindbergh and Charlie Chaplin were the famous figures of the day, and Band-Aids and Q-tips were the newest products on the market.

I felt the story could have expanded on Gloria’s profession as a wing walker. One section referenced an air show where Gloria performed as a wing walker on Rand’s plane. However, as the title of the novel is, Daredevils, these sections could be expanded to give readers a broader picture of the dangers involved in this line of work. I also noticed several errors in the text. It surprised me to find Lindbergh misspelled on more than one occasion.

I rate this book 3 out of 4 stars. Daredevils is a light, enjoyable read written from a Christian perspective that holds the reader’s interest with a blend of action, suspense, and romance. I would have given the full four rating but for the spelling and punctuation errors. Readers who enjoy historical fiction, Christian romance, and suspense will enjoy this story. If you prefer romance stories with more explicit scenes, this is not the book for you.

I've been to Kill Devil Hills! I love that the book takes place there. I wonder what happens to the protagonist. I'm curious, too, what a wing walker is. I'll gave to look it up. Thanks!

I knew the title sounded familiar. (Not only is it overused) but I thought I could put the name to a movie. I am glad at the mention. Thank you for a great review, sounds like the book is worth a read.

Heart! We will forget him!
You an I, tonight!
You may forget the warmth he gave,
I will forget the light.

When you have done, pray tell me
That I my thoughts may dim;
Haste! lest while you're lagging.
I may remember him!

What a wonderful premise! A lady walking as a wing walker is something I had never pictured before in my mind. Rand's character seems to be really interesting. Your review is a a joy to read!

I like that Gloria has depth in her character and she is portrayed as someone who has her own challenges and quests to accomplish. I also admire the author's research for including historical facts in the book that makes the read more believable. Thanks for the thorough review.
