VieVie La Fontaine
by Linda Heavner Gerald
In this fictional tale of VieVie La Fontaine by Linda Heavner Gerald, a story unfolds during World War II with Adolf Hitlers true stories entwined. I would rate this book a 4 out of 4 stars simply for the fact that there were no spelling errors. I think the love story part of this book was a strange one. I do not understand how a man could love a woman who was never committed to one person in her lifetime of affairs. I guess each person has their own way of loving someone. However, I did enjoy the war story parts of this book since they were based off of truth.
VieVie La Fontaine was a young, beautiful French woman married to a French general. She loved her men, not just her husband. While the two would flaunt their affairs they still seemed to care for each other. Although, in my opinion if you love and care for someone and take them as your spouse, you would not be unfaithful. How this worked I wouldn't know. Mark, a son of her former lover, ends up staying with them as Hitler starts to destroy and overtake Berlin. His parents felt he would be safest far away; Not knowing that the war would travel so far. As Mark enjoyed his new fancy lifestyle, something oddly unexpected happens between himself and VieVie. Knowing his father was once her lover didn't even seem to phase him. The general seemed unaware, though he would not care due to his own affair going on. As time goes on the General goes off to battle as Paris is now overtaken by the Germans. VieVie and Mark are now left to survive and take care of each other. They soon discover the French resistance fighters and become more interested in fighting than hiding and watching others did for their country.
VieVie, however has different plans. Some claim her to be insane, she has a dark secret mission that nobody would understand. All of Paris knows her as the most beautiful woman and the biggest whore. She has no shame flaunting around her naked body all over town as men fight over her. This is all a game to her. As years pass by Mark and VieVie become estranged. VieVie does unspeakable things while Mark tries to survive as a french resistance fighter. Not knowing if death will become of them, they starve and fight and try to stay alive with whoever they can find to help along the way. What will become of these two and their lovely Paris? What will become of their futures?
I could tell this book was professionally edited due to no errors. I had a hard time pronouncing French words along the way, but that didn't stop me from enjoying the book. I think anyone who enjoys learning of our history would enjoy this.
It's also fantastic that the author mixed in a fictional love story into this book. In my opinion that makes it even more of an interesting read, even if I don't agree with certain parts of the romance. This is what imagination and reading is about. In the end, I can say this was a well written, enjoyable storyline to entertain my time.

I am not certain I will pick this up as I tend to read more non-fiction from this time period than fiction, but it sounds like a good book for people who are interested in WWII historical fiction.
