Conflict on the Yangtze by Greg Kater is a historical fiction. The book stores a lot of accurate historical details and it shows that the author has done a lot of research to gather these pieces of information.

Jamie and Jacko are military veterans. They now work for the Commonwealth Investigation Service (CIS). They are informed by Colonel John Cook of MI6 that one of their operatives has died in China so they will be posted there. Their mission would be to expose a large scale opium smuggling ring. The situation in China was so hostile that they had to take a totally different route to get there. After they start working on their mission, it doesn't take them too long to notice suspicious activities along the Yangtze River.

Soon, they learn that the smuggling ring is very widely spread and that it won't be an easy task for them to bust the ring. Will their mission be affected by the hostile situation in the country? Will their families be safe?

This book has many characters. Usually, I'm distracted if a story has too many characters but the author of this story has presented his characters very well and used them very efficiently to create a tightly-packed plot. The author has described each scene very vividly and that creates a perfect picture of the location in your mind. Especially, the descriptions that the writer has provided of the Yangtze River is impressive.

The main plot is very well-written and it keeps you glued to the book. The writer has ensured that the level of suspense doesn't go flat at any point throughout the story. The narration is very smooth and it makes the story more exciting. I must mention that Sarah, Jacko’s half-sister managed to surprise me. I liked her character a lot and especially how she uses her skills to save the day when it seemed highly unlikely.

The thing that I liked the most is undoubtedly the inclusion of facts throughout the story. These facts helps the readers to get a better understanding of the plot and the importance of several places like the Astor House Hotel which the author tells us, hosted Albert Einstein. I'll rate this book 4 out of 4 stars.

There was nothing that I could dislike in this book. The editing of this book is also very well done. I'm sure this book has been professionally edited as I didn't find any error in it. I'll suggest this book to fans of suspense-thrillers. People who love to read books about history should definitely read this book. I must mention that there are some very violent scenes which might be disturbing to children. It's best if they avoid reading this book. Overall, I enjoyed reading this book.
