According to my dictionary, a soldier is one who serves in an army. My own definition of the term ‘soldier’ is a selfless, intelligent man, who has given up his life to serve a greater cause – that of his nation. According to my dictionary also, an army is an organized military force equipped for fighting on land. While this may be true, I see the army as a group of brave, courageous, selfless, and valiant men, who have come together to fight for a common cause whether with guns, on land, or anywhere else.
Having defined these terms from my viewpoint, I go further to narrate this tale. A Police Action by A. A. Freda is a fictional romantic war story centered on the life of a young soldier (James Coppi). Coppi hangs out with some of his soldier friends at a bar one night. While seated alone at the bar, he does not participate in the fun going on around him. A young woman (Samantha) approaches him. She accuses him of being either gay or married. This sparks off a conversation between the both of them. This conversation is the foundation of a relationship that may or may not survive several challenges they face in the future. Other plots in this story are Coppi’s life as a soldier in Vietnam, and his numerous money making ventures as a soldier. When Samantha begins to matter to Coppi, Coppi will have to fight a different battle with himself that has nothing to do with ammunitions or guns. How does Samantha take Coppi’s military career and his reluctance to come to terms with his real self? Does he love her? Will he come back to her from Vietnam? What if it’s too late for both of them? The answers to these questions bring the story to several climatic moments that are enthralling.
The author’s language was a bit complex. There were a lot of military slogans and terms in the story. This contributed in making the story educating. The theme of love and selflessness were exhaustively interpreted in the story. This attribute endeared the story to my heart. The characters were real. One could easily identify with the roles they played in the story. This made the book a realistic read. The story also had lots of humor. I laughed at some of the soldiers’ banter.
I rate this compelling read 4 out of 4 stars. It had very few errors so I didn’t take out any star. It looked like it was professionally edited. There was something about Coppi that endeared him to me. He was smart and intelligent. He used his intelligence on certain occasions to help his superiors in the army. This endeared him to them and got him out of some of the mess he created for himself. I enjoyed this attribute of his the most in the story. I have a fondness for a man that has both physical strength and intelligence.
I recommend this story to soldiers and people who have their loved ones in the military. I also recommend it to lovers of romance and war stories. All of these people would see something about themselves in this story. I do not recommend this read for anyone who doesn’t like war or romance stories. They would not be comfortable reading this story because it has a lot of war and romance in it.
I enjoyed every aspect of this story. The only thing I didn’t like was the cover page. I think the cover page was not compelling enough considering how interesting the story was. This was what I disliked the most. I feel the story deserves a more attractive cover page.
