Forgiven by Geoff Lawson is a historical fiction book. The author tells us about the South African War. The book also narrates the series of events that Richard Wilson had to undergo for the girl he fell in love with.
Richard was a volunteer with the Whanganui Volunteer Rifles. He had never thought that one day he would be fighting in a war. He fell in love with Rachel. She is the daughter of a wealthy merchant and due to their difference in class, she is reluctant to accept his love for her. When her parents begin to Question his commitment towards her, he joins the army to fight the war to prove that inspite of the distance between them, they can hold on to each other.
The story drifts between Richard's time in the army and his love story with Rachel. As the story continues, there is an air of uncertainty over Richard and Rachel coming together ever again.
What causes this uncertainty? Will they ever come together again?
The author has done a great job. As the story drifts from one point of time to another, the narration of this book had to ensure a smooth transition to avoid any confusion. The writer has been able to deliver that. His style of narration is very smooth and not for once did I get confused about the time jumps. I was amazed to see such smooth transitions.
My favourite part of the book is definitely the accurate pieces of information. The author has surely put in a great deal of effort and time to research about the war and include his findings into this book. Initially, I was totally unaware of this war but once I started reading this book, I was surprised as to how much knowledge I had acquired about the war from it. The writer should be appreciated for his hard work.
I also liked how the writer ensured to include characters from different sections of society. For example, Richard was a farmer whereas Rachel belonged to a sophisticated family. Not just that, he has also brought in characters from the British side and not just the South African side. Having said that, I must mention that the author has introduced the character of Willy suddenly without any background information. This was a bit confusing but as the story progressed, we are well informed about Willy. I'll rate this book 4 out of 4 stars.
This book was flawless and I couldn't find anything to dislike in it. There were no errors throughout the book as a result, I believe it has been professionally edited. I'll suggest this book to fans of historical fiction stories. People who are interested to know about the South African war should definitely read this book.
