A Police Action by A. A. Freda is an insightful look into the life of a man, James Coppi, who was shipped off to fight in Vietnam after being drafted. Before leaving, he met a girl named Samantha. She was not in a good spot in her life. She was pregnant, all alone, and stuck in a dead-end job. Coppi does everything in his power to help her and makes sure she is proved for before he leaves for Vietnam. However, he is not the reliable man he tries to be for her. He is a troublemaker, and he doesn’t know if their love will be enough to last his deployment or if he even deserves her.
This book is a coming-of-age novel. Both Coppi and Sam grow up a lot throughout the course of the novel. Their relationship and the war change them in ways they didn’t expect. The focus of the book was on the development of the characters. Sam and Coppi were well-developed; the supporting characters were also well-developed. I thought that each character had unique traits, and they all seemed real. Coppi was a bit of a hustler and would do anything to make a few dollars. Sam, on the other hand, was a hard-working girl who fought to improve her life. The two balanced each other out in a plethora of ways, which made their dynamic very interesting. The characterization was my favorite part of this novel.
The writing of this book was also excellent. It was funny, serious, and heartfelt all at once. The dialogue between the characters was realistic but extremely witty at the same time. Coppi especially had many excellent one-liners. A lot of the humor was rather dark, but it fits with the underlying tones of the book. It also did not diminish from the horrors of the war that were described. The humor, oftentimes, would point back to the atrocities that the characters were facing on the battlefield.
This book was edited exceptionally well. I could not find a single mistake throughout the entire book.
I am delighted to award this book a perfect 4 out of 4 stars. I would recommend it to those who enjoy historical fiction and romance. It explores human growth and relationships in a historical context. It is not suitable for younger or sensitive audiences due to explicit sexual content and profanity. However, if such content does not bother you, then this book is a worthwhile read.
