Review by andjela6501 -- Deceitful Survival by LC Lee
Life has interesting ways to test our strength, patience and our will to live. We all sometimes find ourselves in a situation that we think is hopeless and we often need just a little thing to push us forward and show us that not everything is lost, this book could be it.
Deceitful survival is a book which impersonates the persistence of one woman even though she is restricted by her gender in a patriarchal society, she solves her problems and copes with challenges using her brain. This book makes us wonder what boundaries are we ready to cross for the sake of happiness and our loved ones.
Deceitful Survival, by LC Lee follows Beth through her life, from difficult childhood because of losing her parents, ferocity of her Aunt Simone and finding the courage to escape that hell leaving the last shelter she had left. She vows to become a nun and was sent to Haiti where she met stubborn but charming and respectful Father René. Both of them got faced with the temptation of breaking their vows for the sake of their newborn love. Protagonists often have to make decisions that could affect their lives. Beth is determined, independent, strong and empathic woman who would do inconceivable things to keep her family together. She doesn’t lose hope and stays persistent even after the loss of her friend, husband and the only son.
This book is a breath-taking historical novel, filled with romance, action, adventure amusing twists and turns that can show you the power of love and teach you not to give up in tough times. I recommend it to adults and teenagers who enjoy in uncertainty and want to immerse in the book on its very first page and to stay there until the end.
Lee described the characters just enough for us to feel connected with them. He gives them flaws, weaknesses and fears that are demonstrated through their emotions, struggle with God and religion. I personally enjoyed observing their development and growth throughout the book.
Deceitful Survival is a well-written book, addictive, easy to read, has clear and precise describing of characters and events, it has interesting and creative plotline and for those very reasons I rate it 4 out of 4. Altogether I think that this book is worth reading. I have noticed only two typographical errors, and those are “Welcom” (page 33) and ” The Vodun dragged in her in as she ..”
