Dagger's Destiny follows the forbidden love of Catrin, a Celtic princess, and Marcellus, a Roman. Catrin is faced again and again with the difficult decision of family or love first and struggles with accepting the results of her decisions. Throughout the entirety of the novel, Catrin fights to accept her destiny and keeps looking for ways to change what the fates show, including trying to rewrite her father's curse.

Dagger's Destiny really sees Catrin come into her own as a Druidess and warrior princess. She learns how to connect to the ancient magic that scares her, and also learns some valuable information about those surrounding her. She suffers loss and the consequences of putting oneself first before the needs of others. Marcellus too learns that not everyone is honorable, and has to learn to live with the long term consequences of his actions.

Linnea Tanner offers up a deeply moving historical romance complete with all the pain and heartache anyone could wish for. However, it is certainly not a dull, rote romance novel. There is plenty of action, magic, and intrigue that keeps the plotline moving, and there are plenty of twists that keep readers on their toes. This is a sequel, and while it could be read as a stand-alone book (enough detail is given to catch a reader up to speed) reading it as a series would be recommended. Be prepared to laugh and cry all while rooting for Catrin and Marcellus' love!

However, let it be noted that this book is not for the faint of heart. There are instances of discussion of rape, molestation, murder, brutality, and even brutality in various forms. Many of the instances are tastefully done, and are far from offensive, especially as they are properly placed within the historical context of the book. There is also a lot of description of druidic practice and magic usage which may be offensive to some, but once again is well written up in proper historical context. Finally, there is some coarse and vulgar language such as calling a woman a cunni.

This book is a paragon of good editing. I did not notice and glaring or subtle grammatical or spelling errors. The use of italics within the text makes it easy for the reader to follow when the words are a thought versus conversation. Linnea Tanner writes with great elegance and efficiently paints very vivid images of 24 A.D. Britain on the being of war. I would give this book a rating of 4 out of 4 stars. I greatly enjoyed the word-painting, superb editing, and well-researched work. As a historian, there is nothing worse than reading a historical novel that has glaring historical inconsistencies.
