Review by quikiquiki9 -- Apollo's Raven by Linnea Tanner
Written by Linnea Tanner, Apollo's Raven is an epic fantasy and historical fiction novel and the first installment of the Apollo's Raven Series. Catrin, the celtic princess, develops magical abilities in where if connected to her Raven, she can see the future and present. The King, her father, has prohibited the use of these magical powers but Catrin persists, and continues using her magic behind her family's back. With the use of her powers, she sees Roman warships approaching and rushes back to the castle to warn her father. When she arrives, she finds her father already speaking with Romans. The romana make demands that would put the Celtica at odds with the neighboring country. Before they leave they make an exchange. Marcellus, Roman, stays with the Celtics while Catrin's older sister goes with the Romans.
King Amren leaves Catrin in charge of Marcellus in hopes that she'll get as much information as possible from the Roman. Catrin has plans to do what her father told her, but she finds herself in a forbidden romance with Marcellus. While also discovering that they have a powerful bond. Catrin's powers also continue to grow and she finds herself with many enemies.
I loved reading Apollo's Raven. When I finished reading this story, I was so confused and waiting for the next book. Linnea Tanner does in amazing job writing a high fantasy historical fiction novel and keeping the readers engaged in the story.
What I liked the beat about Apollo's Raven was how the author wrote the love story between Catrin and Marcellus. It was passionate and magical. The love between the two characters was so beautiful. The issues, cane with their families believes.
The politics in this book really took it into different places. It was so amazing and well written. The world is full of secrets and betrayals that keep the reader guessing.
There was a slight time period mistake with the use of the word 'shenanigans'. The word isn't really place or time appropriate and there are so many other words she could have used.
I will say, I was slightly confused at the beginning. We are kind of just thrown into the story with very little backstory. It doesn't affect in the long run, but don't put the book until, at least, 5 chapters.
I will rate Apollo's Raven 4 out of 4 stars because it is just amazing. It is a beautifully written fantasy historical fiction novel and I fell in love. I would recommend this book to those who love epic fantasy and historical fiction. The title of the second installment of the Apollo's Raven Series is Empire's Anvil.
