A Police Action is a thrilling novel by A. A. Freda. It is both a sad story of a meaningless war and an inspiring love story. I enjoyed every page of the book, and it exceeded my expectations.

The main character of the novel is James Coppi. At the beginning of the story, he appears to be an arrogant and mercenary person, who puts his own well-being in the first place. He lends money to soldiers at high rates of interest. However, driven by despair, all soldiers resort to his financial help. As the plot develops, Coppis’s qualities are gradually revealed. He turns out to be a caring and noble man. Besides, he is quite intelligent. Coppi is a peculiar mixture of strengths and drawbacks, and this makes him the most complicated character in the story. He has remarkable knowledge in military tactics that gains him the respect of the senior soldiers. At the same time, he is stubborn, disobedient, and spontaneous.

An unexpected acquaintance in a bar totally changes Coppi’s life. He meets the attractive Samantha, who reveals the gentle man hidden behind his rough surface. Their relationship develops fast. Coppi takes the role of Sam’s savior and helps her cope with a difficult situation. This puts the beginning of her immense love for him.

The novel raises serious moral issues. It presents the hardships of the soldier’s life in Vietnam. War is depicted not as a heroic event but as a force that brings nothing but destruction. Innocent people lose their lives fighting for causes they do not even believe in. The novel presents the meaninglessness of war, opposed to the blessing of love. Another moral issue, apparent in the novel, is related to the vulnerable position of women in society. They are still in an inferior position and easily become victims of sexual abuse.

My favorite parts of the novel are those depicting the development of Coppi’s character. He turns from an insensitive man into a kind-hearted person, who is ready to help everyone. Besides, he bravely stands for his ideals and is not afraid to face all kinds of challenges. There is not anything in the book that I do not like.

I rate this novel 4 out of 4 stars because it is a really magnificent book. I recommend it to the lovers of romantic novels, as well as to those, who enjoy reading about war events. Maybe it is not a suitable choice for the lovers of science-fiction novels. The book was professionally edited, and I did not notice any typos.
