Catrin, a princess of the Cantiaci kingdom of Britannia in 24 AD, is a warrior of her people. She sees the Romans coming into the kingdom and knows that this will not bode well with her father, King Amren. She has discovered a connection with her raven and fears losing herself to magic.

The Romans have sided with a neighboring kingdom and support her twisted half-brother Marrock in his claims for the Cantiaci throne. The meeting is heated and in order to bring a possibility of peace, King Amren, agrees to keep the son of Senator Lucius Antonius as surety. Catrin is trusted as protector and jailer to Marcellus Antonius while her father travels to the Catuvellauni capital to begin negotiations and save his Kingdom.

Catrin has to navigate her growing magic, her attraction to the Senator’s son, and the ruthless betrayals of those close to her in order to save her kingdom. Her family is torn by a mysterious, ever changing prophecy that both terrifies them and gives them hope.

Apollo’s Raven by Linnea Tanner is a fantasy set in the time of ancient Celtics. The story is told in first person, yet switches the characters who are doing the telling. This gives the reader multiple view points throughout the story and helps build suspense as the reader will have fore knowledge of events of thoughts of characters before events unfold. The first person perspective also helps you to bond with and the characters. The writing is easy to understand, the character interaction is well thought out and the story flows well.

There is a good pace throughout the book and major events are spaced out well throughout to keep the reader’s interest. The attraction between the characters at times seems too rushed and unbelievable because of the speed. The beginning of the story took focus to sort out character interactions and past actions, but by the middle of the book the reader has a clear understanding of events. The end of the book definitely was very quick to finish as the story really grabs you. It ends in a culmination of suspense and leaves you wishing for the second installment to be written quickly so you can unveil the questions that are left unanswered.

There were only a few instances of grammatical errors. I believe that it has been professionally edited.

This fantasy is well written and will be difficult to put down once you have started it. Because of this it achieves a rating of 4 out of 4 stars. Readers who like fantasy as well as historical fiction will be pleasantly surprised with this book. There are a few profanities as well as erotic scenes. I would recommend this as appropriate for readers in their late teens and above.
