[Following is a volunteer review of "Apollo's Raven" by Linnea Tanner.]
Apollo's Raven
Curse of Clansmen and Kings Series
by Linnea Tanner focuses on the Celtic-Roman era.The main character Catrin is the Celtic King Amren's daughter, who is considered to be a sorceress by her people. Although, the king has other daughters, Catrin is the one chosen to fight for her country.
Apollo's Raven gets its title from the characters beliefs in multiple Gods, as well as, the fact that Catrin can see through her raven's eyes. During the course of the book Catrin meets and falls in love with a Roman named Marcellus. When he is taken prisoner by her people, she is commanded to get close to him, in order; to learn the Roman's secrets. Her greatest dilemma stems from her desire to protect her people while dealing with her intense feelings for Marcellus.
This book is a story about shapeshifters. Druids and magic. The main theme of the story leaves the reader wondering if one should fight for family or true love. Catrin has to figure out how to express her love for Marcellus without dishonoring or endangering her family. Catrin has to defend her country from not only external forces but internal as well.
Apollo's Raven by Linnea Tanner centers around a political arena involving the Romans and Celts. The story depicts a time of war,individual country's beliefs and customs, plus spiritual powers. For example:the Celtic King believes there is a curse that is connected to Catrin's birth. The story includes scenarios of political backgrounds, historical events,familial obligations and super natural powers.
I found the story very interesting, definitely a page turner. The author does an excellent job of foreshadowing and building suspense. The author also gives very detailed descriptions of characters and events. The relationship between Catrin and Marcellus, while forbidden is tender and sweet. However; there are some rather graphic and violent scenes that follow the storyline. The detailed descriptions of characters,events and scenery pull the reader into the story. There is plenty of intrigue and history to keep the reader completely enthralled.
I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars due to the level of intrigue, suspense and unpredictability. If I could,I would take away half a star for the graphic, violent nature of the book. I would rate it 3.5 out of 4 stars. Overall, I enjoyed the plot and cliffhanger at the end leading into the next story in the series. There are some erotic scenes that I would give a 3 on a scale of 1 to 4.
I would recommend this book to anyone looking for a story filled with history, political views, magic, romance and suspense. Due to the graphic and erotic scenes the story is more suited to mature audiences. In conclusion, I enjoyed the story so much, that I will be reading the rest of the series.
