In Cesare Giannetti’s book Back to Serve, Captain Corretti speaks the heart of a man who spent his career serving America. It tells a story – not just of events and places – but also of the feelings and thoughts of an American soldier.

Among other things, Captain Corretti struggled between retirement and keeping his family and country safe. Looking for work after retiring from the Army, the Captain applied at various places thinking a position would come quickly, but it did not. Unfortunately, trouble came looking.

A dangerous woman showed herself on the day after his 24 lengthy years of service, on the very day he completed his outsourcing. She threatened his peace and security before her Dad was to…finish him? At first captivating and charming, a NYU law student from Russia, she strung him along until his mission to Budapest. He then took an express train from Moscow to St. Petersburg, Russia, where her father lived in an effort to protect himself and his family.

One of the attributes of the book is the story of how a serviceman without a job who had a career behind him feels about himself, and how his family reacted to it. Servicemen frequently go through these things, and it was enlightening to read this book. I thought it very brave and good. People need to be aware that soldiers have these feelings when they cannot find work after retirement and need to rethink how they think about them and react to them. Cesare Giannetti did these soldiers a service with his book Back to Serve.

This book showed that a career of service is service for life, retired or not, for it can follow you. The evils in the world once confronted in battle don’t stop because of retirement. Not only can the retired be called back up to service, but thy must also keep their eyes peeled. "Captain Corretti sat in the bar facing the door, remaining alert."

Because he was wounded in battle, and for his valiant efforts to help hold the Mosul airport for Iraq, Captain Corretti earned the Purple Heart. Also, he came to grips with himself.

I found this book captivating and interesting. I give it 4 out of 4 stars. There were very few typos or grammatical errors. It links family upbringing with success in service, and is full of personal ideology. It was also gripping to read. I least liked the quick ending. I recommend this book to young adults seeking to join the military, to military spouses, and to all who are interested in the military.
