Review by MadamwordsAlot -- Bedu: Bedouin Boy, Poet King
The story of Bedu is the story of a young man and the son of a poor shepherd, who fears for his family when they use the last of their flock to feed and entertain a King, a Princess, and his army for an evening. Amidst the events of the fateful evening, Bedu is presented with an opportunity and given a task by the King himself that sets him out on a journey across the ancient landscape to fulfill a promise to the wise king and his princess. During the course of the journey, Bedu begins the pursuit of finding a better life for himself and others, as well as finding redemption for the sin he committed.
Set in the ancient Middle East during the time of Jesus of Nazareth, Bedu: Bedouin Boy, Poet King by David W. Sutherland and Paul McKellips, tells the story of a journey in the form of a parable. A story that leads our main character across the ancient landscape learning philosophical truths and the personal and physical journey required in order to build something out of nothing. Drawn from thoughtful meditations of kindness, the story is a classically told parable of karma and the gifts that come from paying it forward and looking out for others.
I’m giving this book a rating of 4/4 stars because of how the story had woven together with different aspects of karma and morality to create a compelling tale of how a shepherd boy who set out on a journey of redemption to change his life and along the way changes the lives of many. It was a well-told story and overall an insightful read for readers of all ages. The story takes place over an indiscernible period of time, encapsulating a long journey supposedly over a number of years within its pages. My only complaint was that it was too short and would have enjoyed exploring the world further within the text. Bedu’s journey was overall very enjoyable with a strong lesson many readers can benefit from.
Readers would enjoy this book for those looking for a hopeful and uplifting message regarding charity and human kindness. The story also includes mentionings of the life of Jesus of Nazareth, being set in the time period of his life. Readers looking for a reflection on the teachings of Jesus and Christian values will also find enjoyment in this book.
