This book is action packed and full of excitement. If magic, forbidden love, history, politics, and fantasy excite you then this book is perfect. It’s a story set in first century AD Britannia during Roman times. Dagger’s Destiny is the second book in Linnea Tanner’s Curse of Clansmen and Kings series. Entering into this well written world of Celtics and Romans breathes life into historical fiction and magical mythology in a way that captures the reader from the first page to the last and has us guessing at what’s to come. The point of view varies; for example, across chapters, the view can differentiate between multiple characters.

Catrin, a Celtic princess and druidess, is in love with the Roman enemy, Marcellus. Their people harbor a deep hatred for each other and make their love taboo and almost impossible. As if this was not bad enough her father, King Amren is cursed and desperately trying to decipher and stop the curse set upon him while his daughter has betrayed him to lay with the enemy and his firstborn son, Marrock, seeks to destroy him and take the throne. Tensions rise and the strength of love is tested while trying to keep their allegiances to their own people. Things to watch out for would be the mention of sexual content, graphic violence, and profanity— if these sorts of things bother you. However, neither is done in excess.

What I liked about the second book is how the author fills in details. For someone who did not initially read the first book, I did not have any trouble following along with the characters and previous events that happened, so in this way, the author does a good job of bringing major points full circle. Her scenes are described in rich detail and are easily able to be visualized and in a world of fantasy, I feel this is important.
Tanner’s storytelling is exquisitely done— especially with all the points of the plot that come together. Everything is like a wheel, each event turning into each other. Even her secondary characters are well rounded; like Ferrex, a farm boy who is now a warrior of King Amren, with the strength of an ox and referred to as “the lion”.

What I liked most about this book was the pace and detail— as well as the world itself. Each moment is fully encompassed. Tanner doesn’t make the mistake of rushing over even the smallest descriptions or points in the dialogue. As for the world she has created, I am not easily intrigued by historical fiction and prefer one or the other but with Dagger’s Destiny, I found myself easily succumbing to the story. I believe this has to do with how well Tanner interweaves all of her themes together: the forbidden love, betrayal, magic, history, mythology, and much more. I give this book 4 out of 4 stars. This book seems like it was edited professionally and is well written; even moreso, I thoroughly enjoyed it.

I recommend this book for anyone who enjoys romance, suspense, action, magic, and Britain/Roman themes. This story is full of adventure, strong characters, and interesting twists and turns. The audience for this book is adults, I would not recommend it for younger audiences. As mentioned above there are descriptions of violence, profanity, innuendos, and erotic scenes.
