Review by Sydney Nyamasoka -- Sandra Eden's War
She was well trained, fully confident, and brave. Sandra Eden was a British SOE (Special Operations Executive) agent sent from the London headquarters. She had a special and critical mission to extensively and thoroughly sabotage the Nazi forces in France through the aid of the French Resistance. This well-structured and sufficiently narrated tale is found in the historical fiction book titled Sandra Eden’s War written by Mike Low. The book has 168 pages sub-divided into 10 chapters. A relatively short and action-packed narrative.
The book is narrated in both the first and third persons interchangeably and I found this switch very engaging and captivating. The setting is in the World War II era.
Sandra is parachuted into the region of Normandy, France. To her shock and that of the pilot, the parachute did not open and function as expected. To the pilot, Sandra would be and was, certainly dead as he reported back in London. However, Sandra did not die. She just got bruised as she landed on, and through, a mushy cedar tree whose branches saved her life from an abrupt and fruitless end of her mission as an SOE agent. How did her seniors back in London take and act on the report from the pilot who thought Sandra Eden had died? Saying more about this for a book with just 168 pages would be a total spoiler. Get your copy and unravel the thrilling tale.
Within some weeks, a series of well-planned, tactful sabotage in Normandy were effected under the leadership of brave Sandra. Unfortunately, this led to reciprocal fierce retaliation from the Germans resulting in the death of some allies and a large number of innocent civilians. However, Sandra’s mission bears fruit but in an arduous and eventful way. Find out more in this book.
There are many reasons why I enjoyed this book. It is properly structured, professionally edited, easy to read yet filled with thrilling action spread from the beginning to the end in a suspenseful fashion. The way it ends hints a sequel and that was interesting. The characters are properly defined and set appropriately in the progression of the narrative. I only noticed two errors.
I found this book to be worth a rating of 4 out of 4 stars. I would recommend it to lovers of historical fiction, secret operations in times of war and action. The war setting comes with violence, torture, and grueling struggles that warrant the exclusion of children from the targeted readership.
