Sandra Eden, a British Special Operations Executive (SOE) agent, is parachuted to Normandy weeks before D-Day. Her mission is to provide as many interruptions and distractions as she can to the German forces in Normandy. This was to be done along with helping the French Resistance fighting to free their land. Her mission was instrumental for the success of Allied Forces in the Normandy Landings of June 6, 1944.

Sandra Eden had a precarious landing while entering Normandy but it was nothing compared to what was ahead of her. Together with the French Resistance, she sabotaged major German supply lines and disrupted the workings of the Gestapo. She became a symbol for bravery for anyone who was incredulous of a woman fighting in a war. She fought spectacularly and strategically by using her bravery and wit alike.

Michael Low in Sandra Eden’s War presented the inner workings of a typical mission of an SOE agent. The story is fiction but the amount of research done on this and the way it is presented, makes it seem factual. It also showcases the atrocities of the Nazis and their control over France during World War ll. The story is narrated analytically and descriptively, almost devoid of emotion. It seemed more of an After Action Report than a story, reflecting the general air of straightforwardness that war demands. There is a note of urgency throughout the book that is maintained with short descriptions of scenes and bland dialogues. This rush of action makes an engaging plot keeping readers on edge of their seats. There is a looming thought in the back of the head that this is a war zone and at any given moment the characters can be captured, tortured, or killed.

I liked that the book was thoroughly researched. The details of the mission, the planning, the action, were all written meticulously. Never in any scene did the story seem implausible. I loved the representation of dauntless women agents during World War ll. There were a significant number of them during that time but it’s not generally addressed. Even though Sandra Eden is fictional, she aptly portrays all the female agents during the War who risked their lives for the victory of the Allied Forces. These women worked in the background that aided in the eventual downfall of the Axis Powers. There wasn’t anything that I disliked about this book.

As per my points above, I give Sandra Eden’s War by Michael Low a 4 out of 4 stars. I couldn’t find any major flaws in the book and I loved the representation of women as fearless leaders. Hence, the full score. The book is relatively clean in terms of profanity and amorous scenes. The editing is impeccable. The narration is simple and forthright. I would recommend this book to people who enjoy war fiction and strong female protagonists. It is a quick read about the missions of SOE agents during WWll and I think people will enjoy it and find it very informative.
