Review by Omega 6 -- Sandra Eden's War by Michael Low
It is not every day we see a woman stand up to lead. Women are looked upon as weaklings. They are seen as species that should be protected but not for Sandra. In the midst of war, she was determined to lead and do things as she was ordered. This shows that women can still make a difference. They are not as weak as they have been portrayed by many.
Sandra Eden’s war by Mike Low is about Sandra, a Special Operations Executive (SOE) agent who was sent on a mission to Normandy, France. She was to help prepare the ground for the arrival of their Allies. She was to cause as much destruction so as to slow down the activities of the Germans who had taken over France. She was able to carry out her mission with the help of Michel Tardivat, leader of the Maquis group. Sandra Eden’s war depicted the bravery of women in the person of Sandra. She was able to prove to the Maquis that she was not a weakling as they had conceived her.
The kind of suspense this book creates and the fearlessness it portrays about Sandra got me really surprised; I never saw these things coming. The way I was carried away by this book is something else. I was reading it and at the same time eager to know what will happen next. One turn of event that made my heart skipped was the arrest of Sandra at a train station when she was going to meet another SOE agent in a village. That hit me unexpected. Speaking of what I love most about this book, it is the way I flowed with the story. There were not unnecessary details or too much description.
If there is something I dislike about this book, it would be the way it ended. I don’t know if Sandra Eden’s war has book 2. The way the story ended is like telling a story without conclusion though it ended with Sandra being reassigned to France. Two questions ran through my mind as I finished reading the book and they were: Was France victorious? and Was the allied invasion successful?
This book is suitable for people who love history/historical-fiction and war.
Going through Sandra Eden’s war made me realize that a woman can lead and even become more courageous than a man. Michel really portrayed a good example. He never stood in the way of Sandra, he gave her the opportunity to lead. Sometimes, all women need is the chance to showcase their prowess and that was what Michel did. Another intriguing part of this story is the concern they showed for one another. They were always concern about the safety of one another. The story also features betrayal. It is not new to us that, 'among the twelve, there must be Judas.’ This was portrayed in the person of Alphonse. Altogether, the story, to me, is all about teamwork and trust.
I was so carried away by the story that I didn’t recognize any error. Sandra Eden’s war by Mike Low seems to be professionally edited. There was nothing I dislike about this book other than the way it ended. It would be unfair if I take away a star from Sandra Eden’s war because of that. I therefore give it 4 out of 4 stars.
