Review by Justjaal_ -- Sandra Eden's War by Michael Low
The year was 1944 and the World was in the middle of a terrible war against the evil Nazi empire. A couple of weeks before D-Day (the day the Allied forces invaded German-occupied France), Sandra Eden was assigned with an important mission that would greatly affect the liberation of Europe from the oppression of Nazism. As an agent of the British Special Operations Executive (SOE), her job was to cause as much disruption as possible to the German Army. Right from the start, the mission was plagued with dangerous situations, like when she parachuted into France and her parachute didn’t open; fortunately, she fell through the branches of a big tree and survived with only some scrapes and bruises. Many soldiers would have taken this near-death situation as a sign of a doomed mission, but Sandra used the experience to remind herself that she needed to keep her senses sharp and anticipate danger at every turn. It was this mental toughness made her the perfect soldier for the task.
Sandra Eden’s War by Mike Low is a historical fiction book about spies, action, war, and strategy. The story takes place during World War II and even if it is a fiction novel, the book takes testimonies of real experiences of brave female and male SOE agents that made great contributions to help end the war. Many of the things mentioned in the novel are accounts of real-life events.
My favorite character of the book was definitely Sandra, she was fearless, clever, strong, faithful and stubborn. She wasn't afraid of risk or danger and never abandoned her team, but she wasn't naïve and didn't forgive treason. She wasn't afraid of doing anything and always led her teams’ missions. Eden was a very powerful woman that never backed down even when she was underrated for being a woman; instead, she made all the men who dared to insult her eat their words. Nevertheless, she was still beautiful and flirty when she wanted, showing that beauty and intelligence can go hand-in-hand.
I also liked Michel and Nancy. Michel because he was the first man in her team that recognized her for her talent instead of underestimating her like the others and Nancy because she was a very bright and brave soldier.
The thing I liked the most about the novel was the empowerment of the female characters because women were rarely mentioned in that moment of history. I think the story showed that in WWII there weren’t only brave and courageous male soldiers, but also brave and strong female soldiers. Another thing I liked about the story was its fidelity of some actual aspects of the war, like the way the Gestapo Agents operated. Also, the plot was well structured, and everything was easy to read and written in an interesting way, even though it is a historic book (and some history books are written in a complicated way).
The only thing I didn’t like about the book is that in some cases I felt that the story was a little bit monotonous; however, overall, everything was good. The story had some surprising moments, but they didn’t give me the “wow” feeling (like something completely unexpected).
The book has very few profanities, but there is one explicit description of torture. It was very strong, so sensitive people should consider that before reading. Besides that, there wasn’t anything strong enough that could stop anyone from reading this story. This book can be a great way to become informed a little bit about history while enjoying a good story at the same time. Also, the book had only 160 pages, so it’s a fast read.
I rate Sandra Eden’s War with 4 out of 4 stars. The story was good, the characters were incredible, it was exceptionally well edited (I didn’t find a single error) and it had a very good setting. I recommend this book to people who like historical books, especially those about WWII. I also recommend the story to people who like action books, with strong female leads.
