Back to Serve by CW3 Cesare Giannetti U.S. Army (Ret.) is about an American soldier’s life experience. After a long time in the military, he decided to retire and spend more time with his wife and sons. He also wanted to visit his father who stayed in a different city. When he cleared, he planned to go to have a drink and then get some sleep because he was going to drive for long hours the next day. In the bar where he went to get a drink, he met a pretty Russian woman who bought him a drink and then told him that his life was in danger. This confused him, but he had made up his mind to go home to his family. He then went home and had a good time with his family, but it was hard because he was unemployed. He made plans to visit his father in New York and it was there that the Russian woman came into the picture again. She told him about her father’s plan to kill him, but also promised to protect him. He got a government contract in Europe after months without a job. He used this chance to go to Russia and deal with the threat on his life. He learnt a lesson in this journey. The contract got finished and he went back home. The military recalled him back and sent him to the Middle East. He got injured, and that was the end of his military career. He went home to focus on his recovery and family.

The narrator and his father are big fans of baseball. In this book he talks a lot about this game. The book also contains scenes of violence. Attacks by terrorist groups are part of this story. Like all soldiers he is hounded by the memories of the loss of his fellow soldiers.

I liked the coincidences as used by the author in this story. The best was about the Russian woman. The woman she was named after committed suicide. Her mother committed suicide. Like her mother, she too committed suicide. The interesting part is that the suicides were done in the same manner.

I could not help but fall in love with the way the author made his descriptions. He made the images real and as clear as possible. His use of dates at the beginning of every chapter was enough help in following and understanding this story.

This story has a good flow, and it is thrilling. I rate it four out of four stars. I recommend it to those who love fiction. It is not a good book for very young readers because of the violence it contains.
