Review by KKReader -- Dagger's Destiny by Linnea Tanner
This is a review of Dagger's Destiny by Linnea Tanner. I rate this book 4 out of 4 .
I found this book to be a wonderful blend of historical fiction and a great portrayal of Celtic and Roman culture with mystic references binding them together. The characters were very intriguing as were the conflicts and challenges they encountered.
I did not notice any grammatical errors and found this book to be very well written and presented. There were some erotic writing but nothing that was offensive or should be taken out.
The characters in this book were intriguing and kept me interested and engaged throughout the reading. Princess Catrin and the Roman, Marcellus, were perfect examples of young heros caught up in the politics and drama of powerful families as their love earned them multiple levels of heartache. Both of their fathers, Lucius Antonius, Senator and King Amren unknowingly struggled with the same issues of wanting to be powerful and have trust in their children. They both had trusty commanders at their direction: Decimus and Tryston who both had lost their love of life either to death or to another and whom also had daughters. The character of Marrock the outcast of the Celtic family truly lives up to his wolf like viciousness both in human form or wolf and the mystic powers that both he and Catrin possess were captivating.
The scene where Marrock was attacking Marcellous as a wolf was so vivid and I loved how the connection between Marcellus and Catrin was brought forth in the Mystic Druid magic that was prevalent throughout the book.
The character, Ferrex the lion warrior is fierce and loyal to both the King and Catrin. Not only is he important to the king as a strong and fierce warrior but he is important in that he helps Catrin to earn the lessons of becoming a warrior and helping her to see her druid powers as what sets her above others and gives her the quality the people will follow.
My favorite part of the book is when King Amren has been killed but changes his life force to recognize that he loves his daughter Catlin and that she is not a traitor as he so thought and that he must protect her. How he is depicted as riding in on a riderless warhorse is so befitting of a King. His words here help set the scene for a future book which I am anxious to now read! This a wonderful example of mystic intervention and the curse that has been following him throughout the book can now help Catlin and propel her into the next phases of her Roman life.
All of the characters both with minimal relevance and those that are part of the main story all helped give the visual into the time and life of the characters to set the scenes and make them visually pop off out of the text. This is definitely a book to read and one that is full of magic and adventure. I love that the author included additional notes and insight into the history and setting of the book as well as giving a short prologue into the next book.
