Review by Liveforchrist51 -- Rescuing General Patton
Rescuing General Patton written by Curtis Stephen Burdick, starts off with a historian, John Harding, who is interested to learn the real facts behind the capture of General George Patton during World War II. After meeting the granddaughter of the General at a book signing, he learns much more than he could have hoped for.
The main storyline takes place in Sicily during the August of 1943. General George Patton, the commanding general of the US 7th Army is captured by the Germans and taken to a prison camp for interrogation. The Germans, however, are not yet aware of Patton’s true identity and are left to believe he is actually Colonel Henry Mueller. It is up to his comrades, Generals’ Bradley and Eisenhower to devise a top-secret rescue mission before his identity as a general is discovered. With the help of a ranger captain, Pete Pizzio and his team, they attempt to save Patton through many painstaking and combative adversities. It takes a great deal of heroism and teamwork for this very mission to be accomplished and it all lands on the shoulders of Patton's most courageous soldiers.
The use of warfare terminology throughout the conversational pieces of the story, is a brilliant concept for the readers. By using such terminology, the story becomes more personalized and thrilling. Though it has a surplus of profanity, I feel it is necessary when trying to convey what life is truly like for soldiers during war. The action keeps you on the edge of your seat, eager to see what happens next.
I did not see any major issues throughout the book. For some readers, however, the use of profanity may not be appreciated. Each reader has their own discretion. Aside from one mere grammatical error, everything else is editorially correct.
I would rate Rescuing General Patton 4 out of 4 stars for its combative, thrilling, and very realistic take on the warfare during WWII. Although this book is historically fictional, the scenes depicted, make it seem very realistic to the reader. This increases the appeal of the storyline immensely.
I recommend this book to anyone who is intrigued by action-packed war stories. History buffs would be very interested in this type of literature even if it is fictional. Burdick portrays very realistic qualities in his work. This book is more fit for an adult audience due to the nature of the content , the language presented in combat and the violence it entails. It was a wonderful read.
