The Vanished by Pejay Bradley, a Korean but United States of America based writer and lawyer, is centered on the fight for freedom. The book speaks greatly on how much hardship a country went through to gain independence, modernize its nation, and uphold sovereignty. It takes one through the events that took place before the fight for freedom vanished. The fictional story makes us understand what occurred in the 19th century.

The mission by an aristocratic royal born, Kim Embon, and his friends alongside other citizens to bring their nation to independence was a challenging journey. The story sheds much light on how their culture was before transformation set in. Kim Embon, born into these turbulent times, grows into a fine young man who is determined to bring his country to the position of freedom alongside his friends while at the university. He and his friends got arrested for their patriotic exercises and were faced with many other challenges. Will he and his friends overcome the obstacles? How did Korea get their independence? These and many more were answered in the book.

I enjoyed reading these historical events. The book is in four parts, with each describing how being under the power of another country affected their lives. It tells the story between several families and how the effect brought them together. I love how the book was written from different views of the characters, allowing the reader to understand how the situation affected families of different status. I also love the solidarity between the people and how they fought for their country in every little way they could. It educates the reader on how essential unity can bring the peace and freedom they all desire.

What I love most about the book is how Kim Embon and his friends were determined to do anything in their power and with whatever it would cost them to give their country freedom. Also, I love how I was on edge to know what the end of their fight would have been. My favorite character is Mr. Koo Daesik; he never relented. He was ready to save his country even as he had to sacrifice time to be spent with family. The scene I love was when many of the citizens gathered to protest for their country. It did cost some lives, but it showed their unity and strength and how much they craved for freedom.

What I least love about the book was the confusion of Kim Embon's personality. He grew up having a great personality but in the course of reading, I was made to understand that he was selfish.

I rate The Vanished 4 out of 4 stars for the reasons stated above. I recommend the book to those who enjoy historical fiction and would love to be enlightened on historical events or enjoy reading about historical events.
