Review by Cynthia Ray -- Dagger's Destiny by Linnea Tanner
Princess Catrin is torn between loving Marcellus. her Apollo, and being loyal to her people. Her father, King Amren finds the love affair that she had with the Roman foreigner as an insult to her people and treasonous. He gives her the ultimatum to reject and spit on her love for Marcellus or have her head separated from her body (like he did to Rhan, his first wife). To make things worse, her forbidden love affair with the Roman has succeeded in altering the curse that Rhan forced to be inscribed on a dagger in his possession. Now, Catrin must fight to win her father’s love and trust again. She must figure out what to do with her love for Marcellus. And she must find a way to break the curse that says that her father, the king, would die at the hands of his exiled son.
Dagger’s Destiny by Linnea Tanner is a book that falls into the historical fiction genre. Set in 24 AD, this novel spins a tale of love, war, betrayal, werewolves, shapeshifters, magic, and greed. It sees a lot of druids and magic which I am a die-hard fan of. It is the second book in the Curse of Clansmen and Kings series and the way this novel was written and how it ended makes me yearn to read the third book in the series.
I noticed no error in the book. This leads me to believe that the book was not just professionally edited, but it was also exceptionally edited. The suspense (which is my favorite feature of the book) from the very first page of the novel got me hooked to it till I got to the end. This is a testament to Linnea Tanner’s writing prowess. She is what I like to call a true master storyteller. After reading this book, I have concluded that I do not hate anything in the book. This is historical and magical fiction at its finest. Although I did not read the first book in the Curse of Clansmen and Kings series, I understood everything that happened in this second book. Linnea Tanner did well to explain the events that happened in the first book well enough that I had enough information on the cause of the conflict between the Britons and the Romans. She even mercifully gave enough information on Rhan’s backstory and why king Amren had to behead her. For this, I thank the author.
I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars for several reasons, some of which I have already outlined above. The fact that the author seemed to have researched the era in which the written events are said to have happened and the tribes that she wrote about is one of the biggest reasons for this rating. The professional editing, captivating storyline, and suspense all contribute to the rating above. As said before, I like the entire book and hated/disliked nothing in it.
Readers who adore historical fiction and novels filled with magic will go crazy over this book. However, I strongly advise you to read this novel if and only if you have a stomach of steel. I say this because there is a lot of graphic violence in the book. There is a lot of beheading, mutilating, and death described in the most vivid way possible. There is even rape, profanities, and description of sexual acts (although these are not too vivid). If reading about blood, death, and rape makes you queasy and puke, you should not pick this book up or even contemplate reading it.
