Apollo’s Raven by Linnea Tanner is book one in the Curse of Clansmen and Kings series. This book is set during Tiberius’ era on the island of Briton. Catrin is the main character that starts the story. She has the ability to become one with her pet Raven which is considered rare magic in her community. Catrin is tasked with overcoming a curse that was set on her father when she was a young girl. Throughout the story, she overcomes numerous obstacles both physical and emotional. The story is a whirlwind of historical fiction storylines.

The author did a great job introducing all the characters so that the reader was able to follow along with the many dialogues. There are multiple protagonists and antagonists that keep the story interesting. This story introduces elements of magical tendencies that are a part of the characters' religious beliefs. Omens are introduced that positively attribute to a big part of the plot. I believe the author positively introduced these religious beliefs so that readers who are religious would not be dissuaded from reading this book.

I only have one negative to discuss, and it pertains to the ending of the book. I would have liked the author to finish the book with more conclusiveness. The ending was very open-ended and did not have any finality to the first book in this series. By doing this, the author creates confusion for the reader on why the book ended the way it did. After finishing the book, I was baffled by how it ended because there wasn’t any logical reasoning as to why it couldn’t have been finalized to some extent.

I would recommend this book to young adults who enjoy historical fiction stories. As this is a series, the best-suited audience would be those who enjoy a long-winded setup of the characters. The author introduced many characters at the beginning of the story that was developed throughout the book.

I rate this book with 4 out of 4 stars. This book is extremely well written. This book was also professionally edited before publication. There are some sexual scenes throughout the book. However, they are not detailed enough to prevent young adults from reading the book. Also, the storyline was unique which enthralls the reader to want to continue the series. Overall, the first book in the Curse of the Clansmen and Kings series was outstanding.
