Rescuing General Patton by Curtis Stephen Burdick is an action-packed fictional narrative of the rescuing of General George S. Patton from the clutches of the German military. It brings about a patriotic sentiment and immense respect to the soldiers, who willingly sacrificed their lives for their homeland. The author gives an account of the terrors and obstacles faced by a group of rangers who are given the command to extricate General Patton and prevent a disaster that could change the course of WWII. How far would you go for the sake of duty? The individuality and temper of Major Peter Pizzio are fascinating and intriguing. The unabating fealty that the rangers have for Pizzio is worth mention and does not come as a surprise, considering the commitment and attentiveness that Pizzio exhibits for them.

As the saying goes, all is fair in love and war, the decisions that the commanders take are not to be questioned and are to be the last word, even if it is erroneous and leads to huge loss of life and property. I personally found it disturbing that the higher-ups could command the soldiers on a suicide mission and are not be questioned or even held accountable if leads to a disaster. However, we do get a gist of the circumstances which lead to such decisions and the author does try to justify their side also. The author describes General Patton as a brilliant commander but one who is highly prejudiced. I cannot help but mourn for the loss of so many brilliant individuals for the sake of war, many of which could have been avoided. I felt that the author is paying tribute to all the unsung heroes who played detrimental roles in providing a safe future for their younger generation.

I found the passion and patriotism delivered by the author a major positive aspect of the book. The unfairness and horrors faced by soldiers during a war are traumatic and relatable to many who have gone through it. The book is also outstandingly edited as I was able to read without any hiccups or errors.

The major drawback that I felt is that the author delves deep into the specifications of guns and other ammunitions, which is required to an extent as it is a book based on war. But most of the time I felt bored just by reading those specifications as I have less grasp on those subjects.

I would be delighted to give 4 out of 4 stars for this book as it is a thought-provoking and gripping read. I experienced fear, pride, courage, and a rollercoaster of other emotions while reading this book.

This book may be better suited for action-thriller readers as well as historical-war fanatics. This book is not for the soft-hearted and young readers as it has a lot of violent deaths and action sequences.
