Review of Rescuing General Patton
Rescuing General Patton is a historical fiction novel by Curtis Stephen Burdick. This novel is about a suicide mission kept as a 'top secret' for several years and fought for the sake of World War II. The book talks about the spontaneous actions taken by the soldiers, their brilliant strategies, and stories of immense bravery.
General Patton was captured by the Germans in a surprise attack. His leg was severely injured, thus it resulted in lack of mobility. Aware of the fact that the Germans would torture a General until he gave the details of World War II, he exchanged his identity with a dead comrade. He was helped by one of his assistants to do so. The assistant took his identity and managed to convey it to General Bradley. Plans were laid down and actions were carried out to rescue the General. Captain Pizzio was made the commanding chief of the mission. General Patton had ordered Captain Pizzio to undergo legal processes concerning the failure of a different mission. Captain Pizzio and his Rangers were instructed with training which ended in unfortunate blasts. There were various changes in plans and spontaneous decisions were made to change them and to act accordingly. The novel covers all the details of this mission with finesse.
It is a brilliantly written novel. The combats and details of the war were described with complete clarity. The novel always kept me completely engrossed with all its events. All the characters have proper explanations for their characters. The book ends with all the information of the mentioned officers and gives us a proper ending. It doesn't leave the readers questioning any incident or the happenings of any character.
My favorite character is Giuseppe. He made some amazing spontaneous decisions during the combats. He had a brave personality and was a self-less soldier. My favorite scene from the book is when during the last firing Giuseppe and Pizzio share a small sarcastic moment. The hint of sarcasm in the book remains evident and makes it more entertaining. The book provides us with various lessons about the life of a soldier. The traumas they undergo, their bravery, and brilliant ability to plan strategies. The book also gives an insight into unfortunate events that occur to soldiers who are defending us while we sleep peacefully. The amount of bravery by various soldiers remains unrewarded because of the confidentiality of the situations. The families of the soldiers also remain unaware of the truth in many cases. This book is a memoir of all the soldiers who sacrificed themselves for the success of this 'suicide mission'.
There is absolutely nothing that I disliked about the book. This was my first read in historical fiction, and it left me wanting to read more. It is a professionally edited book, hence it never broke my chain of interest. There are intriguing thriller parts that will keep the readers hooked.
I would like to award this book with a rating of 4 out of 4 stars. I think it is a deserving book which gives us the experience of the mission with great details. I applaud the amount of research that is done for this book. It is the reality that makes it more appealing.
I would like to recommend this book to mature readers interested in reading historical fiction. They should be aware of the various trigger warnings in this book which include detailed combats, fighting, blood, explosions, profanity, injuries, and death.
