Review of Dagger's Destiny
Catrin, daughter of King Amren, had betrayed her people. She had fallen in love with the Roman enemy and has insulted them all further by laying with him. She did not stop at that. She went on to defile nature and the gods by saving the life of this enemy soldier by using her druidic gift. To even make things worse than they currently are, this soldier went on to mortally injure King Amren, her father, in the fight that broke out during a prisoner exchange. How can King Amren forgive his daughter when she has given him cause to believe that her loyalties lie with the Romans and her Roman lover?
She must die. Yes, she must die the death of a treasonous fellow. Being the princess and heir to the throne does not absolve her of her sins against her people. She must die, except she finds a way to change her father’s mind. What better way to do that than to hatch a plan to help her father break the curse that his late ex-wife laid on him and his kingdom. If she can help her father, King Amren, avert the fate that is etched into the sides of the dagger he keeps under lock and key, then she might be able to redeem herself in his eyes and those of her people. This is going to be tough and almost difficult but she must try. They all must because if they do not, then all will be lost.
The first thing I should mention about Dagger’s Destiny is that is a historical fiction novel that shows Celtic Mythologies and events that surrounded the Roman empire during the early ages. It is also the second book in the Curse of Clansmen and Kings series, but the majority of it can be understood without needing to read its prequel. Only a handful of events would need you to have read the prequel to understand or follow it.
I had a good time reading this novel. The story was written beautifully and it was easy to understand. The story is enchanting. The love story is bittersweet. The war is quite graphic and well-detailed. So, I was given a chance to feel and see what went on during the few battles that took place in the book. Linnea Tanner explained every step taken, every sound made, and every emotion felt in the way that any true master of storytelling would. She gave so much time to explain the rituals that were performed by King Amren and his people, rituals that were popular during that time according to Celtic mythology. This shows that she gave so much time to carry out research on that and on every other concept she wrote about.
My most liked thing in the book is how much detail was given about every event and person in the book. As mentioned above, (apart from the rape and the sex scenes) Linnea Tanner did not overlook even the smallest detail. Sometimes this was greatly troubling as her dedication to giving the full picture led to some gory events being described extensively. That does not stop me from appreciating and commending her dedication to giving as much detail as possible. It helped me understand the story in full and to even visualize every plot like I would a movie.
I have decided to give Dagger’s Destiny four out of four stars because it was flawlessly written and the delivery was exquisite. I also did not dislike anything in it. This is because Linnea Tanner paid much attention to plot development, character development, editing (it was exceptionally well edited), research, and presentation. I believe that it does not deserve anything less than a perfect rating. I say this with utmost conviction and I cannot wait to read its sequel.
I recommend this novel to a mature audience that is interested in historical romance and fantasy fiction. There is a lot of blood and graphic gore, beheading, and killings in it (Linnea Tanner did not spare anybody’s feelings when writing those). There are a couple of degrading sexual acts and a semi-graphic sex scene. There are also rituals and descriptions of such. All of these make this book highly inappropriate for the consumption of an audience or readers younger than 18.
