Sandra Eden’s War takes one back to the dark days of World War II, to a time when France had been overrun by the Nazi war machine. It depicts a time of suffering, heroism, sabotage, and rescue from behind enemy lines. The action revolves around Sandra Eden, an SOE undercover operative of exceptional courage and capability, trained by British Intelligence to oversee acts of disruption behind enemy lines with the assistance of the Marquis or French Resistance fighters.

This is an action-packed tale, which most adventure lovers are sure to enjoy. Almost eight decades after the end of Hitler’s war, many still enjoy reading about the exploits of those who were in the thick of it and how they helped bring about a successful conclusion to the war, and Mike Low has ensured that this book will keep the reader enthralled. It describes in well-researched detail, the functioning of the French resistance, how they co-operated with the British, and how they utilized their limited resources to have the best possible impact on the allies’ war effort. The way supply drops were directed and coordinated with stealth and efficiency is well depicted. As is to be expected there are acts of heroism as well as of treachery, and the author has skillfully depicted the various characters that played a role in the war to give the reader an authentic war experience of a rare order. The way that the French got on about their daily life in a time of strife is also well portrayed. It describes how ordinary country folk risked their all to throw off the shackles of occupation by a foreign oppressor and regain their country’s freedom.

There is nothing to detract from the story and hence it deserves only the best review points.

I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars for the aptly related tale that brings the action close to the reader, at times too close for comfort.

Fans of the thrilling war story which includes the whole range of human emotions from suffering to ultimate ecstatic victory are going to love this book. It will be of immense interest to students of history who wish to have a taste of life in occupied France. Young adventure story readers who wish to get a taste of how the world functioned in an era where instant messaging and mobile phone contact with each other were non-existent will find this an eye-opening experience.
