Elizabeth is unlucky enough to witness the demise of her dear mother. It is on one stormy night when she awakens to the muffled cries of her mother. Moments later she was in her parents' room terror stricken as she watched her father smother his wife with a pillow. Her weak hands did not help much in her attempts to shake her father off her mother. As if not enough, her father forces her to lie to her brothers about the cause of their mother's death. But it is not long before her father is deceased. Elizabeth lived with her two brothers and parents on their family farm in Brittany. They lived in poverty, struggling to have their daily meals. Now with both their parents deceased, they decided Elizabeth would stay at her aunt's place until she got married. Life at her aunt's place gets even more harder as she is burdened with a lot of work and literally starved. The few friends she makes while at her aunt's place advise her to join the Ursuline convent of Rouen as a nun. Elizabeth joins the convent of Rouen and before she knows it, she is sent on a church mission to Haiti.

Brace yourself because L. C Lee is just getting started on her epic story in the book Deceitful Survival. Now known as sister Andree after changing her name from Elizabeth, she meets father Rene in Haiti. But then with a looming revolution between the Voduo people, the Catholic church and the French farmers, sister Andree along with father Rene flee for the sake of their lives. You should probably get yourself the book Deceitful Survival to know what happens to sister Andree, or to be precise, sister Andree and father Rene.

This is absolutely a magnificent piece of work. L. C. Lee undoubtedly has a masterly hand in writing. Her style of writing is simple yet at the same time very sophisticated. Her choice of words give the book a professional touch. She uses long but well structured sentences that are easy to comprehend. Being in a setting of the nineteenth century, Lee uses appropriate vocabularies that serve to make the reader familiar with the civilization of that time, which is brilliant. Lee occasionally loads her sentences with well thought about expressions, this spices up the reading experience.

Lee does a great job with the development of the characters in the book Deceitful Survival. Each character is well developed as she depicts them uniquely and with vivid clarity. One thing I find very enthralling about Lee's style of writing is how she harnesses emotions onto her words, she does this in a very unique way, it's almost like she writes the book from her heart, her words hit and reach deep. This made it easy for me to connect with characters in the book, especially the protagonist, sister Andree. In fact, those very vulnerable to emotions will find it hard reading about some of the scenes of sister Andree, the poor soul really suffers. The fact that she is intelligent, strong willed and an adorable soul will make the hurt the reader feels even more unbearable because, the reader will have fallen in love with her, and what's more horrible than helplessly seeing someone you love go through so much agony? Deceitful Survival is packed with secrets, love, lies, pain, a lot of pain and much more.

You will love how Lee gives picturesque descriptions about various details in her scenes and also when describing her characters. Most of the time, I was left picturing what Lee was writing about. Lee aligns her ideas in a consistent way giving her plot a beautiful flow. I particularly loved how each character, however small, played a significant role in the progress of the amazing plot. Apart from sister Andree, you will love father Rene. He proves to be a caring, loving and protective guy, he is such a gentle man with the way he handles sister Andree.

There is nothing worth criticizing about the book Deceitful Survival. I loved everything about the book, it is one of the books I would not mind reading again. I did not find any error in the book. It is exceptionally and professionally edited. I rate it 4 out of 4 stars. Enthusiasts of historical fiction with a touch of romance will love this book.
