Review of Sandra Eden's War
i] Sandra Eden's War[/i] by Mike Low is a book about the involvement of a Special Operations Executive (SOE) named Sandra Eden in the fight of the liberation of Europe from Nazism.
Parachuted into Normandy in France few days to the D-day to help coordinate the French Resistance operations, her parachute fails to open. This can only mean one thing, she would have to fall all the way to the ground. Falling from a height of 3,000 feet was not a thing to joke about, the only reward that awaits anyone who dared to jump from that height without a parachute was death. She is however rescued by a miracle tree which cushioned her fall from this frightening height.
After this miraculous escape from death, nothing can be able stop her. She must finish her mission which is to destroy the equipments and facilities of the Germans in Normandy, cut them off from communication and block their main transportation routes. Her objective is to disrupt the German Troup movement in Normandy. With the help of the maquis nothing seems impossible. Find out how she works to fulfill her mission and find out if she actually fulfilled it in this book Sandra Eden's War.
The themes that were exhibited in this book were the themes of love, courage, boldness, pain, betrayal, selflessness, family, trust and unity.
This book is a fictional book that tries to paint a picture of what happened during the world war two. During that time, Special Operations Executives (SOE) agents where trained to fight and die for the liberation of Europe which was invaded by the Germans and this book though classified as fictional, is based on the world war two happenings.
The setting of the book was in Normandy, France. The language of the book was English which was sometimes salted with French but whenever French was included in a sentence, the English translation was always next to it in brackets.
What I loved about the book was first, the courage and boldness of the main character (Sandra Eden). Her act of courage and boldness was seen in the way she plotted and successfully rescued Bobby Coles from the captivity of the Gestapo. Bobby Coles was an SOE agent like her but was arrested by the Gestapo as a result of a tip they had received about his movements. What marvelled me was that even though the place that Bobby was imprisoned was described as being escape-proof, she still dared to break into the building and carry out her plan.
My Favorite part of the book was the part where she freed herself from the imprisonment of the Gestapo. Without anything external help, she successfully broke out if the prison room. This had never been done by anyone but this woman broke the record.
Another part I loved in the book was the part where she fished out the Gestapo informant in their company. The trick of the wine-tasting hour was just so amazing and I wondered how she was able to come up with such a brilliant idea in such a short period of time. If I am to describe her, I would say that she is a wonder-woman, a super human.
There was nothing I hated about the book. The book was well seasoned with French and I really enjoyed it. The characters were well developed and were of great importance to the book. The book was well written, professionally edited and seasoned with French. Also the message of the book was well delivered. I give this book 4 stars out of 4 stars because of the above mentioned reasons. I recommend it to lovers of historical books.
