Review of Sophistries of Summer Days
Sophistries of Summer Days by Jenny Lofters, is a remarkable fictional story that would hold your attention from beginning to end. The story is fascinating, encouraging you to read on and on.
The story is based in the West Indies, in the early 1930s. It showcases the life of Cherrimina, at the age of fourteen to adulthood. Cherrimina lives with her mother and grandmother in a simple and loving home. Their life is surrounded by neighbors and villages who would visit from time to time and vice versa. Most of her knowledge of the villagers is what she would hear on these visits, where she would sit quietly and listen. The shop located next to her home was another source of information, where she would eves drop while the adults were conversing.
Cherrimina’s life is simple until she meets Dove, a foreigner who comes to the island to live. Cherrimina and Dove forms an inimitable friendship and bond when Cherrimina helps Dove escape from a man who is chasing her. Running for their lives in the middle of a stormy night they seek refuge at a house in the village. That night changed both their lives forever, with secrets that had to be shared with only Nana and Mary Mary, Cherrimina’s grandmother and mother.
Cherrimina’s life changes drastically again when an unexpected fire occurs at her home. As she transits from teenage years to adulthood, her life holds sorrows and joys. Her love for her island is profound as is her love for her grandmother.
This book highlights the culture of the West Indies. The writer vividly describes places, houses, villages, and the people in a most dignifying manner. Each person has a unique personality and a unique story that goes along with their personality, which adds to make the story more enlightening.
I found this book to be wonderfully written. The story is fascinating. I love the way the author captured and explained the West Indian culture. The dialect used perfectly exemplified the people and the culture of the West Indies. Being from the West Indies I was able to understand, appreciate and love this book. Although the story itself was fictional, the description, language, myths and culture of the island was real.
I proudly rate this book four out of four stars. This book is a wonderful piece of literature for those who like a bit of history and interested in the culture of another country. The story is also brilliant and exciting. Once I started reading this book, I was unable to put it down until I reached the end. The author has done an extremely good job in creating a fictional story which holds so much elements of reality. I loved this book. There is a bit of profanity here and there, which would make this book suitable for young and older adults.
